Support and discussion for all of Akai’s modern standalone MPCs including the MPC X / X SE, MPC Live 1, 2 & 3, MPC One / One+, MPC Key 37/61.

I used to work on the SP 202/303 and I loved the selectable SR seetings... (Long on 303 and Lo-fi 1 on 202 specifically)

There is no way to actually change the sample rate inside the sampler on the MPC? The Air Lo-Fi plugin just doesn't sound right and I really dont like it at all for this purpose.

IDK what the 303 and 202 sound like.

But...

Did you try other plugins?

Did you try combining different plugins?

Sometimes there is and sometimes there isn't a 1 and done solution.

AFAIK there isn't an option to change the sampling rate directly aside from the plugin. However, it is basically just a matter of resampling a sample at a higher pitch. From 44,1kHz, resampling at +12 semi-tones will give you a rate of 22kHz...

The SR on them sounds rather distinct (IMO).

yea i can easily do this in an external program or with a diff plugin...But, my bad, I forgot to mention I am trying to do this in standalone lol

Yea, I forgot to mention I tried that. I tried to pitch it up 12 semitones, flattening the pad and then repitching down to get the SR reduction artifacts...but this didnt work unless im going about it the wrong way.

The time stretching and pitching is actually pretty decent on the MPCs, you gotta really go to extremes if you're trying to get that old school sound like the old S series used to do. When they still had their Get Satisfaction forums up, I remember playing around with the Warp function with their rep Eliza, and I could pretty much half a loops tempo and still have it playing almost as clean and clear as it was at regular pitch/speed. It works a hell of a lot better to get 'that sound' on my old EMU than it does on the MPC Live.

That's what I figured from the beginning.

I'm not actually trying to get it to sound dirty and not "dirty clean" way that you'd get from an old school sampler...but dirty in a dirty way, as in the way it sounds shitty out of the SP-202 lo-fi 2 setting lol...which I believe is 3.3k

The air lo-fi plugin can do this....but it just doesn't sound good. Even on 100% wet...it still sounds like a parallel effect where the original sample is playing on top.of the original sample.

I can't understand why they don't just allow variable SR in the sample edit engine.

You must be doing something wrong though because for me the lo-fi effect works exactly as expected. Try to play with the anti aliasing setting (on/off) and the pre/post FS settings. Otherwise try to use the Decimator plugin and tweak the decimate setting. I had a SP202 long ago and it didn't do anything special when it comes to sampling at lower frequencies.

I mean it's pure mathematics so it should work without hurdle if you resample some audio at a higher pitch, then pitch it down back to the original pitch, without any timestretching function enabled or something.

A remarkable "secret sauce" technique (on top of the semi-up and resample and semi-down dance) is to add the BS 8 or BS 6 filter for mysteriously added crunch when the cutoff frequency is near 127. BB 8 and BB 6 work as well for a slightly different flavor, especially if you bring the cutoff frequency down a touch. A smidge of resonance is worth experimentation as well.

Picked this gem up from an old Tubedigga video:

Aside: In this video Tubedigga mentions that 12 semitones just isn't enough to produce noticeable effect. The sweet spot seemed to be around 28 semitones. I haven't experimented with other values, but 28 works great for the material I've used it on so far.

Exactly what Ace and Hype said. I also said it, combine things with other things, I just didn't wanna spell it out cause what fun is there in that? Fun part is experimenting imo.

IMO the Bandpass and BandStop filters are NO JOKE.

I’ll use the filt/env page as much as I can before using fx for those same type things. That page imo is more naturally intertwined with the mpc than fx.

Automations done in the filt/env page are easily done, you can see the knobs moving after you've recorded it. I like seeing the automations move right then and there in that page, no need for me to search around in other menus for the values, fine tuning yes, but usually no need imo.

Sometimes fx automation in grid view you'd need to add the item and in the case of filtering, it's right there on the filt/env page making it less menu-divey.

Along with the LFO MODULATION page you can get away with some SUPER creative things on those 2 pages alone.

I gotta start using the Modulation Page more.

That was it!! 28 semitones (and up) got me *that* reduced SR sound. Much appreciated.

Still would be nice if there was a dedicated control for it.
