MIDI VIA [MIDI PORT DAW] - MPC LIVE 2 VST mode

Hi all,

I'm running my MPC in vst mode via Reaper and I want to be able to send out midi through the mpc via the DAW to my synths / devices.
I had this setup [MPC Midi out > to DAW > to synths] working before, but it stopped working again after a few modifications to my setup.

I refered to this guide: https://support.akaipro.com/en/support/ ... n-your-DAW
However, I want to route midi out to my DAW as well.

I have two specific questions:

1.) Could anyone clarify which MIDI device exactly is the MIDI data being sent to via the MIDI Port DAW?

2.) Is there anyone else using the MPC in VST mode and routing MIDI out as well? If so, could you please share how you are accomplishing this?

I do this often, but I'm not sure what you mean with the first question. As far as routing MIDI out from the MPC when running MPC2 as a VST goes, make sure the MIDI out on your MPC is set to "DAW." Then in your DAW, open another channel strip and set it to look for the physical MPC MIDI port you're using.

Maybe instead of thinking of it as:

[MPC MIDI Out > DAW > Synths]

it might help to think of it as this instead:

[DAW <--> MPC MIDI > Synths]

THe points you mentioned I am aware of, however, I'm a little confused about some issues I'm experiencing with this setup.
I get the midi out via the DAW port to work sometimes, but it is very inconsistent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't This is why I'm doing a little troubleshooting

Basically, I'm wondering how the midi data flows through via the MPC<>VST<>DAW and if data from Midi Port DAW is supposed to go through any of these ports:
MPC Live II Public
MPC Live II Port 1 (probably not, as this is the HW port on the MPC)
MPC Live Il Port 2 (probably not, as this is the HW port on the MPC)
AkaiPro Internal MIDI

When you say "synths", do you mean hardware or software? If hardware, just physically connect them to the MPC ports 1 or 2 and choose the related options in your DAW. If you mean software synths, are you loading the softsynths in the MPC VST or in the DAW? Admittedly, I don't know the difference between "MPC Live II Public" and "AkaiPro Internal MIDI", but choose-whatever-until-it-works never failed me.

I feel like the actual how and why things are routed the way they are might be more of a question for both Akai and the DAW you're using. That said, I have something of a checklist when it comes to DAW/routing issues:

- Reinstall Akai Internal MIDI port software
- Make sure all software is updated
- Restart computer

Sorry if this was sort of generic and vague. I'll try the MPC with Reaper tonight.

Essentially, I would send the signal from the MPC Live/MPC64 to the USB MIDI ports of my synths, or just to the VSTs. This setup worked for a while, but then it completely stopped recognizing MIDI outside of the MPC64 channel in Reaper. It’s really strange because it does detect a MIDI signal on the MPC64 track, but when I send this signal out, it doesn’t detect anything on any other channel (All Midi Inputs).

When I use Ableton, it doesn’t detect any signal from the MPC64 either.

I’d prefer not to use the MIDI out ports on the MPC itself.

I’ve already tried reinstalling the MPC drivers, but unfortunately, that didn’t solve the problem.

In Ableton, I'm noticing that nothing seems to be registering as MIDI In or MIDI Out on the track MPCII is loaded on, despite the MPCII VST showing activity on MIDI In. I get it to work by telling another Ableton MIDI track to look for MIDI from the track MPCII is loaded on. At that point I can route the MIDI signal to wherever it needs to go, be it external or internal. As for Reaper, it might be similar. YMMV

I got this to work, and this definitely helps with troubleshooting.
Now, I just need to find out what the "MPC Live II Public" and "AkaiPro Internal MIDI" do.
It would be great if it’s possible to send a signal to one of these ports.

Based on this documentation, it (seemingly) should be possible to use this port: https://support.akaipro.com/en/support/ ... -in-cubase

"3. Select MPC Live Public (or MPC X Public) for MIDI Input and MIDI Output, then click Import."


I have also opened a support ticket, so if I find out more, I'll post it here.
