XY Automation - Can't Make it Work

Hello! Got my MPC One+ last week, and every day I'm working on learning a new aspect of it. So far, it's done pretty much everything I've asked it to, and I love it.

Today, I'm playing with automation. For the most part, I've been pretty successful. Shift+Automation to enable recording with the red icon, then press Play or Play Start, and wiggle away until I'm done.

However, I can't get automation to work with the XY effect. I think I'm going through the procedure on page 58 of the manual ("Recording Automation with the XY Pad") exactly step-by-step. But when I turn off automation recording and play back my sequence, there's no XY effect applied.

Is there some trick here, or a step that the manual is missing? The XYFX is assigned to my track as an effect.

That's the step I was missing! XYFX Location needs to be set to Program, and then it works perfectly.

how come i cant get my mpc x to do this?? i have xyfx on program and on master and on the program .. i even put xyfx on the actual sample to ... it just wont automate??? plz help ?
