Midi out not working via midi cable

I'm trying to control an external synth using my MPC Key 61 as a controller. Midi cable out from my MPC to midi in of external synth. Simple normal setup. When I play the MPC keyboard, no sound comes out the external synth. When I use the same cable and connect it to the midi out of a different synth, sound comes out of the external synth, so it's not the cable. The only adjustment I made was going into "midi control" and changing it from channel 10 to channel, although it doesn't say if that channel 10 is the transmit or receive channel. Is there something else I need to do or do I have a bad midi out port?

Did you create a MIDI track? You need to do that. And you need to configure it to use the MPC MIDI port and set the MIDI channel to the same one as the external synth.
