Overwhelmed, trying to set up custom instruments

On the first page of the manual it says which version it is for.

If the screenshots don't look like on your screen you don't have the right manual.

Yeah, all in all I think this just isn't the instrument for me. I'm looking for more of an "instrument", this is more like a work station for music producing... and it's really not my cup of tea haha. I just got the wrong thing, I'll find something I'm looking for eventually.

It's absolutely an instrument and can be set up in a million different ways and options with how you want to use it, it's just a matter of learning the ins and outs. That's what I love about the MPC, but I do have a background with one going all the back to the 2000XL, so I'm a bit biased. You said you like video game music, so maybe something like a Syntakt or Digitakt might be more in line for you. More live controls without the initial setup. The Syntakt has a chiptune feature now. Or maybe something like an SP404 MKii which is very versatile paired with a guitar, mic or anything you feed it. Some people love the Octatrack, but it gave me a headache and I hated the workflow, but loved the sample mangling of it. If you got the money the new TR-1000 looks amazing to me too. We are in a golden age of music production tools so look around at all the different options. Good luck in your search.
