Like some of you, I've had MPCs with years of projects on them. Programs, sequences, and sounds I still wanted to use, but were stuck on hardware I don't always want to boot up. Getting them into modern MPC always meant rebuilding by hand (vibe killer, I had no appetite for that), and the part that never survived was the movement, the mod matrix, the filter, the LFO. The notes make it; the life of the sound doesn't.
I got tired of that and built a tool (Keypad Studio Pro, macOS).
The 4000 side (if you have a 4k, I do):
- Point the Projects tab at a folder of MPC4000 sessions — view them, audition the keygroups and drum kits inside without converting anything, harvest programs into loadable MPC 3 .xpm, or convert a whole session (sequences + programs) into a modern MPC 3 .xpj you can open on desktop or standalone.
- And they come across nearly identical to the originals. The modulation matrix carries — mod wheel, envelopes, LFOs, velocity, aftertouch, bend — instead of landing on a generic default.
- The right filter at the right slope — all 31 MPC filter types matched exactly, pole counts included (a 1-pole HP stays a 1-pole HP).
- LFO shape and speed carried.
- Mixer per part — level, pan, mute, FX send, tuning — plus each track's velocity feel.
- .ALL files, and .mid files convert. If all you kept were the MIDI exports, sequences rebuild from them with notes, names, tempo and time signature, and each track routed to the program it actually played — read from the project's data.
- Truncated old samples get repaired on the way in instead of skipped.
Straight about what it doesn't do, since someone will ask: CC / program-change automation and song arrangements aren't carried over, standalone .SEQ files aren't supported, and the 4000's triple-filter routings have no modern equivalent, so those are reported rather than approximated. A conversion report tells you exactly what came across and what didn't.
For modern MPCs the app does a whole lot more! Create expansions with categories and automated preview creation that carry over to your hardware and software MPC 3, modulation matrix correction, random synth patch creation (the new OSC features are dope), Ableton Sampler/Simpler to MPC conversion, and Project/Sample/Expansion folder mirroring (backup) — plus a whole lot more.
