MPC X & Samsung SSD's

Hello,

I have learned that the 870 EVO SSD has better write performance than the 870 QVO SSD, and that with all things considered, the QVO is still a really good drive. However, I do not know about the MPC X's 'write speeds'.

I ask:
Would the EVO be overkill?
Or might the QVO underperform?

The price difference is only $35 CAD but i dont wanna pay more for nothin'. If anybody has any knowledge or experience on the matter, please advise.

The sata port inside the MPC X is just connected to the internal USB bus so it isn't ever going to achieve true sata performance. I've found sata speeds to be similar to those found from using a good quality SD card.

IMO don't sweat it and just get the cheaper drive, the samsung drives are all reliable and good quality in my experience.

I’ve got a Samsung 860 EVO 256 GB SSD drive in my MPC X and it loads and saves at good speeds. Other thing to note: we’re just saving audio files and sequence data, etc.; not larger files like videos, program executables, games, etc. so even if you were to use a regular spinning HD or SD Card unless you’ve got a very large project using up most of your memory it shouldn’t take too long.

Just a heads up: while read/write performance won't really be noticeable between the QVO and EVO on the MPC/Force, the EVO does have a 5 year warranty versus a 3 year warranty for the QVO.

I initialized the drive by connecting it to my cpu.

I did t name it or anything.

I installed it.

Mpc x doesnt show it anywhere. No sign of it.

I am in stand akone mode and have never plugged the mpc x i to the cpu.

Any ideas?

You say you initialised it, but did you actually format it? I'd recommend exFAT format, and give it a name, e.g. MPC SSD. Do this on your computer, make sure it's working and then install in your MPC, should work fine.

Initializing is not enough, you must also create a partition and give the Volume an name.

The manual says that i can format to exFAT and also delete partitions all within the mpc x.

For clarity:

I must format it, name it and set a partition all within my cpu before putting it into the mpc x. Then, once its in the MPC X, i can go ahead and reformat as well as delete the partition.

No, just partition, format and name it in your computer. Job done. The MPC internal formatter is known to be unreliable (according to some).

Overkill for the MPC, the sata port just runs off the USB3 bus, plus the MPC browser itself is painfully slow, huge bottleneck especially when loading files (there appears to be some real time analysis occurring, which is amplified even further on the Akai Force). There is very little difference in speeds between an SSD and a class 10 SD card in my experience.

But of course do get a good quality SSD for reliability, just don't worry about the speeds, it's pretty much irrelevant for the MPC.
