To me the newer akai filter seem to have a eq curve or something applied to them. They just seem exaggerated and meant to “pop out” at you. I compared them to the akai mini ak, which has some awesome digital filters btw, and they are very different but similar in a way.

Akai mini ak, seems to have more of a “flat” response but not bad sounding and more “surgical” and “open” sounding. Kind of reminds me of the filters on the 4000

Maybe the filters on the live are meant for more “punchy” drum sounds where the mini ak seem to be more all around filtering.

The elektron boxes have better filters on some of their boxes. The baseline filter on digitone is one of the best digital filters I have used but the other filter you use after it sucks. Makes no sense, and you can’t process external sound through the filters so the box has little use for me. Mini ak can do the same with external sound, but it’s a lot more menu diving to set up.

Yeah it's true Akai filters are somehow punchy but I like it for that, they work great for me if you put them on the output to filter all or after some distortion/white noise.
I never tried past Mpc filters nor Elektron ones.
The best LP filter for me it was the filter on Novation Supernova, it was very smooth and pleasant.
Also I love the MS20 filters, very aggressive, very musical in my opinion.
And also I like Roland ones, they are very digital but I don't care, they sound good, especially the Superfilter.

Damn. Good looking out, I use the eq’s and channel strips on my outputs sometimes but I think the filters would be a lot better suited for that job. Not sure why that never clicked for me.

Thanks

What does much more digital mean?

Hey mr.Charles welcome back.
Mpc filters are digital, isn't it?
I said it to differentiate them from ms20 analog filters.
I have nothing against digital filters, at the opposite I like them a lot.

Yeah give it a try.
I also sometimes send some tracks to a subgroup and use the filter on it.
I think Akai filters sound very good when used with a whole group of sounds or to an output. You can put frequency on a knob and resonance on the other and play with both.

Naw I don’t care for digital distortion algos . Well atleast not on hard ware. Not my thing really in general I like more subtle and smooth effects. Really can’t vide with those squelchy acid bass lines either. A lot of people like them though.

If you like that guitar style you may want to check out the chandler germanium pedal or the other one little devil or something. Pricey but a big warm sound.

Myself I’m more going for just tone, don’t use more distortion. At some point I’ll just get a culture vulture and call it a day.

I wanted to use a MXR bass distortion, the best distortion I tried so far.
The problem is they all are mono and can have a bit of noise floor sometimes.
I think Roland ones are quite good though, they are algos, but they come from Boss which I think has some experience about guitar effects.
Do you know any good stereo analog distortion to be used at line level, something small and not expensive?

Always see the term of people describing something as digital. But never understood what people meant by it. Cause I don't know what digital sounds like. Maybe they mean clean or very low noise floor.

Buy two Behringer OD300 Overdrive / Distortion Pedal for 25 dollars each.
Deucetone Rat is one. https://www.ratdistortion.com/product/106/deucetone-rat

Ahah no I'll never buy anything from this brand.
And I don't feel so comfortable to use two pedals at the same time.
Akai Grime distortion is not that bad for now.

Frisbi look into the analog heat. Might be able to catch a deal used. Line level, wide spectrum of distortion and of course the filters and midi. You would get a lot of utility out of it for just a bit more than that rat

Yeah I am reading the review now.
A bit pricey, isn't it?
You have one? You know, I don't love much a metal/rock distortion, I like more when the distortion becomes like a dusty wave, maybe the most similar thing I can say to explain is white noise. Not heavy and metallic.
This is why I loved MXR bass distortion, you put gain at max and all becomes like a drone.
Is Analog Heat capable of that?

Maybe 400 US dollars used. There is prolly a ton listed so you can probably negotiate a good price even lower.

They have a pedal geared towards guitars ( analog drive) , the analog heat is meant for synths and busses. It can do that heavy distortion but also just subtly saturate ( my favorite circuit is called “saturate” ) the signal. Everything in between. It’s more of a Swiss Army knife type box than just excelling at one thing. It can be used as a eq, filter box, distortion box, pseudo digital compressor using its envelope follower, all parameters have midi cc and lfos can be synched to the beat, etc.

I have a ton of gear bought and sold over the past 3-4 years and I never thought once about selling the analog heat. Even though I have better sounding filters, not much use for distortion, or even power use it. It’s just a great solid tool to have.

When writing or doing some minor sound design with my mixer I run everything into the mixer and run the main output into the AH before going back to the live. I guess I could use it when mixing on the mixers outs but I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself here. Just got a mixer after like 8-10 months without one. So still getting used to this new sound and workflow again.

It really shines for me using it after lush reverbs and such to dial in the right ambiance. Eventide h9 into the analog heat sounds amazing to me, just love the sound.

Hey man that's the best review ever.
You should work to make reviews.
I think you used it too much, it's time to get rid of it.
I can help you.

 naw, mine ain’t going anywhere. I forgot to add you can save presets too.

I’d check it out if you can, I think you will dig it. There’s even a guy on YouTube who uses it with his mastering. He’s got the thing down WAY more than me.

Great.
I'll check it out for sure.
Much appreciated.
