I personally think 2.9 will be a small feature update (and maintenance/bug fix release) just to tide things over until 3.0 launches. They'll need some marquis features for 3.0, may possibly launch new hardware with it (MPC X MK2 anyone?) and keeping the new standalone plugins along with disc streaming for 3.0 would certainly make the whole thing more enticing and create some much needed buzz.

I think we can all agree that 2.8 is an awesome update, but things will wane as the months dredge by, and 3.0 is going to need to make a big ass splash in an already crowded pool of options out there.

Yeah that makes sense.
Dan Gill said one day that Mpc will get 3.0 and merge with Force Os some day.
So it's possible new plugins will come with a 3.0.
Not sure about disk streaming though.
It could be a bit critical, to avoid pops and problems with disk streaming, maybe.
And maybe they should change all Mpc architecture for that.
At the end Multi midi is just a flow of datas, so not critical while disk streaming should use some mechanical.
I would love to see audio through usb one day to send all tracks to a multitrack through usb.
But let's see.
Akai is working very good with updates.

That way i can Hook My 75" TV up to it in the Stu!

EPIC GAME CHANGER  (me using this New Generational Lingo)

There’s no reason 3.0 has to come right after 2.9. There could be a 2.10, 2.11, 2.12 before 3.0. The relation between major.minor is arbitrary. It’s not a numeric sequence that has a hard relationship. Fun fact Maschine is on 2.10.

Can you not do that via the software?

Not everyone uses/likes MPC software, I don’t, so standalone options would be export and/or usb audio.

The MPC platform as a DAW? Never going to happen. Compared to a mature DAW, the MPC software is woefully inadequate. And there's not enough runway to get it there, unless they go the VC route and invest in some serious development.

I'd say 2.8 was cautiously promising. IMO 2.8 is the first update in a long time that focused on essential improvements. The last 6-7 updates were mostly about non-essential stuff that didn't directly improve composition using this platform, and IMO they were risking a perception of a lack of commitment and ability to make this a SERIOUS music production option. That said, I hope 2.8 is a course-correction and not just a one-off to be followed by more Splice-level non-essential stuff. Not when there are SO many essential things that need done first. After they're done? Hell add a connection to Napster for all I care.

2.9 and 3.0? More improvements to features and functions that directly improve the platform as a music production tool. The list is long. Make sure they include the 4000 as a roadmap for sampler functionality enhancements.

Yeah exactly.
I never used the sofwtare.
With audio through usb, you could just connect a usb cable, play and record all you play., using computer as a tape recorder.

Fre$hBreath wrote:I think most of us can agree that MPC 2.8 is a good step in the right direction, and I'm only guessing here so don't rake me over the coals over this, but I think 3.0 is where we will see the MPC become a full-fledge DAW that can compete with Reason, FL Studio, Studio One, Logic, etc.

They got a major portion of MIDI out the way, so maybe in 2.9 we will see more of a focus on MIDI by them adding MIDI FX, maybe Audio to MIDI conversion, and then maybe in 3.0, we will see those new instruments plugins along with advanced audio editing, Plugin Delay Compensation, disk streaming and hopefully a linear timeline for song mode and an improved mixer with more inserts and send/return options.

What do you hope to see in 2.9 and 3.0?

While I am optimistic about a few things, like 1-to-1 tracks (that arranger looking view that Dan was going on about) and by extension a tempo track, and "proper" time signatures, etc. I really like the MIDI plugins idea above.

As far as DAW talk, the MPC already is a DAW, not like traditional desktop ones, but it certainly is. I don't think you'll ever see a "full" in the sense that it'll be more or less "unlimited", like Cubase or S1.

Technically DAW just simply means Digital Audio Workstation, so... before someone gets their underwear in a bunch. The MPC is a workstation that does digital audio...

I do think that Akai has a basic core hardware "DAW" at their hands though. The sequencer, sampling capabilities, synths and effects, etc. The basics of these should be their primary goals and concerns.

A slick running sequencer, with sampling, synth and effects capabilities. Make those really good, then follow with additional stuff.

Basically the Akai Developers need to Dissect DAWs like FL Studio, and mimic all of their features
They're doing it slowly. Like with that Retrospective Recording (FL been doin that)

Warp aint happening, the CPU cant handle it. And yeah nah, just because YOU think Fruity Loops is the shit doesn't mean we all need to force ourselves to work in that environment. Why not go mimic Logic or Cubase or Protools or a real DAW if you're going to go that route? Logic has been doing 'retrospective recording' for decades now. FL is still years behind all of the real DAWs.

I haven't used FL Studio for mixing in a very long while, but some of the DAWs you mention are just catching up to FL Studio in certain areas. Every DAW has it's weaknesses and it's strengths. But to talk about FL Studio like it's trash is just plain crazy. It's a dope platform, I think I'm gonna revisit it soon....

There are very easy ways around this if done correctly. They could redesign it so if you chose the "Elastique Pro (Best Sound)" option, the audio is warped/rendered in a lower quality "MPC" during playback in "preview", while rendering the warped audio in high quality in the background - and fading the high quality audio back in when it's done rendering. The MPC's multi-core CPU could surely handle an operation like this in the background. Hell, Propellerhead Reason was doing this almost 10 years ago with Record. The technology is there, for sure.

Well, aside from its complete UI, then - sure, it's dope! ;)

MPC 2.9 will have the 1 button compose, the Mozart Piano Sonata No. 11 Algorithm.
MPC 3.0 will charge you for updates
MPC 3.1 will grant the ability to finally export standard MIDI files, in standalone.

Honestly, I don't even know what they're going to do. I haven't used splice or pad color options yet.
