Not necessary a "poor man's" anything.
I'd say Elektron are well aware of what they're doing; DT is not trying to be as deep as Live, for example, but it's a fun box to make beats pretty quickly with (not to say you can't do a lot of tricks with Digitakt).
And even though it's not for everyone, limitations can be great. There is a reason (in addition to their sound) that people still like to use old samplers such as SP 1200: limitations can actually make you more creative and make you concentrate on what you can do a bit more (whereas a DAW with no limitations can be intimidating sometimes) and actually finish your stuff quicker.
Every time I work with my SP, I concentrate on what matters the most (beats, bass, some nice sample and some additional sounds) and I come up with stuff I'm really happy with really quickly.
Actually, my biggest problem in DAW world has always been that I absolutely suck at minimal stuff because I can add a ton of this and that (pads and strings etc). I suppose my style has always been quite lush and layered and it does work, but every time I'm forced to work on something more minimal, it's like I almost discover a new side of myself and I feel, "Damn, I should make minimal stuff like this more often because this is refreshing".
