I'm pretty sure the "solution" implied by proofofghosts was "multitimbral implementation".

So with all the reply to the OP's post, how come he/she has not replied? Also can you tell me one MPC that does what he wants? :hmmm: If you do a search on this forum, I'm sure you'll find 100's of post asking about this same functions over the years.

I'm not sure what your point is.

What difference does it make if "he/she" has replied or not?

What difference does it make that some other MPCs do and some do not? The MPC we are discussing has more than one midi input port, seems a bit of a waste not to have multimode.

There's two main groups who buy MPCs. For the Hip Hop Producer crowd, its the best MPC ever. But for the crowd that wants to use the MPC as the centerpiece of a hardware setup with multiple synths, samplers, drum machines or loopers, the lack of MIDI multi-timbral (multi-mode) support and poor MIDI clock functionality is seriously a bummer.

My first MPC was the 2000XL, about twenty years ago, and that kit had solid MIDI implementation... and most of the MPCs since have. But for some reason, they overlooked it on this one (at least for now)... btw: MPC used to stand for "MIDI Production Center" ... that's the heritage of the product line. Hoping that its included in this update, or comes soon.

Multi-timbral MIDI I/O allows several workflow improvements.

1. You can have multiple MIDI controller keyboards to play multiple parts on the MPC sound engine simultaneously... ie: pad/rhythm along with a separate lead part... BUT, that's just one case.

2. You can also setup multiple outboard synthesizers or other hardware instruments to each record and playback to separate MIDI channels, allowing you to quickly switch between the instruments in a live setting / MIDI loop recording, while having each instrument recording to the correct tracks/channels, and playing back on the right instrument... This is vital to anyone who wants to do live sequencing / midi loop recording.

3. Also, with outboard multi-timbral synth/sampler hardware, you can assign tracks to play specific parts/channels on the external hardware. It has been one of the key features of the MPC product line, and for anyone hoping to use the MPC as a centerpiece of a hardware setup, its a key requirement.

Really hoping we hear from Akai soon on this... people like me who have extensive hardware setup / outboard synths really want to know if we should keep our MPC X/LIVE, or switch to one of Elektron offerings. (or get an older MPC unit that had proper MIDI implementation)

Not all of us Hip Hop producers make music the same way. I fit into both of your categories. I've only used a 4000 (and Z4) prior, but the Live is definitely the best MPC I've used.

I don't use my hard synths much any more, and I only need MIDI out to them any way. MIDI out over USB would be cool and I thought I was able to do it once. I have a Minitaur that can receive MIDI over USB, and has a plugin that provides additional functionality over USB. I'll have to try again as folks seem to insist it's not available.

Maybe related and more important for me, I do need support for multi-output VSTs. What's necessary to get all kit pieces on their own tracks from a drum VST, for example, is ridiculous and I've left that to do in my DAW. An Akai rep said this functionality SHOULD accompany the addition of multitimbral MIDI, so I have my fingers crossed. If not, there's not many requesting this support and would be low on Akai's priority list.

This feature has been requested for years. How I solved the issue was to use a Midi patch bay. Do you have another work around that you are willing to share? I would be very open to hearing and learning about it. Nevertheless, if they add it, it’s a win win. Good day to you. Stay Kool. :smoker:

I've never tried using an MPC that way, but the earliest Akai that could do it was s1000 in 1988...so they had that tech 31 years ago.

That’s a good thing to know. Thank you. I figure the samplers had it, because everyone was Midi crazy and the fact they were samplers  . Wonder if the mpc 60 can do it? Any idea?

Thats interesting. You say you used a "midi patch bay" to make a device which only has midi omni reception, behave as if it has midi multi mode?

Can you please explain further?

it is a software issue, making it totally possible to resolve. If you use a touch and don't use the mpc software, the midi in port has all incoming channels available. Again without the mpc software the live transmits midi on channel 10.

what is mind bending is the silence from akai.. but it is not the first time i have experienced their lack of communication. alesis product support is just as useless. they need to take responsibility, hire a communications professional and communicate with their base.

has anyone else noticed how unhappy akai staff look when promoting products on you tube. i reason that if this is how they treat their customers, they probably have little of no respect for their employees... i guess the american way.. build the wall and rot

of course we must wonder where @proofofghosts get's his insights that are not available anywhere else on the internet... my guess he is a fake news'er

The MIDI patch bay solved my issues. As far as your issues, I not sure. I was awaiting for you to share, how you solved them. Please share.
