Suggestion: Paid Premium Firmware Updates

JJOS was basically illegal software from an ex AKAi employee. Sure it helped sell MPC so AKAI turned a blind eye, but they could have sued his ass. just that AKAI was indirectly making money off his ironically illegal work. Noway the JJOS had a clean room implementation.

It's funny, cracking is allegedly bad here, but other kind of license violations like for profit source code theft are fair game... a lot of hypocrisy...

But let's compromise, I'd pay $400 less for a MPC without all the useless plugins like tubesynth or bassline and people can pay $1000 extra for all the "premium" stuff, as "premium customers". Everybody is happy.

JJ always claimed that he was a contractor, not an employee and he wasn't paid in full for the work they contracted him for. If he was working under standard 'work for hire' terms, he owned the work until he received full payment. If this is the case, then he was not 'cracking' anything, it was his code. That's his version of events, akai have never made any comment to the contrary.

AKAI also made it clear the MPC1000 warranty was void if JJOS was installed on the device. JJ certainly didn't have the authorization to sell his software for the MPC series, as a contractor, if he ever had access to AKAI's source code at first place.

from what I recall... JJ had access to Akai's source and build tools...

He had been working with Akai since the MPC2000/XL days, but that was the old Akai, not inmusic/Numark that took over the business. My understanding is that he was basically the person entirely responsible for the MPC2000XL OS and was contracted to make the MPC1000/2500 OS for them. Outsourced effectively. If Im contracted to build an app and the client doesn't pay me, I get to keep the app and sell it if I wish. Nothing illegal with that.

However no one knows the full facts of this, so it's all ultimately he-said-she-said stuff.

I was under the Impression...HE was one of the Engineers who Created the Code, but was never Paid. Akai had a history of pullin that Jack Move on people like the Japanese Jenius and Roger Linn .That's when Numark came along bought it out
