Elektron Digitone is a FM synth with 4 operators "only" but is a beast.

There are a slew of FM synths with 4 ops. Most of the lower range DX versions like Dx100, Dx21, Dx9, etc. The famous Lately Bass is made with 4ops. The Sega systems used 4 op chips as well. Don't get me wrong, I still want 6 or more and I find it kinda backwards to have such a limit nowadays. Having 6 is great for adding additional sort of transients to your sounds. 4 is great for fundamental tone, but the additional 2 can provide the swish, or plucky shit that rounds out patches.

Counterpoint: plugins in standalone were planned from the very start for this new gen-MPC/Force platform, and I'd argue absolutely required to maintain a competitive, feature-rich, modern music production device.

Exactly! This is why I have a Reface DX but still want the Korg OpSix.

And if AIR wants to make a six operator FM synth plugin for the MPC Firmware in the future, I'll gladly buy it.

Exactly! This is why I have a Reface DX but still want the Korg OpSix.

My solution is the PreenFM2 which does a great job at Dx7 stuff + more.

The Preen FM is a six OP FM synth. Yamaha called the DX7 FM, but it was in fact a phase modulation synth. For technical reasons you can't implement feedback with the linear fm that Preen uses. The Preen FM is broadly compatible with DX7 patches but will sound different largely on patches that used feedback. I think the Preen FM wins out - better midi spec, portable, better user interface, huge memory, multitimbral and lower noise floor. If you want a DX7 on the cheap then the Volca FM is worth a look, although it does have a strange velocity implementation, a tiny memory, but the bonus of in built chorus. - YT

That is true, that it is not 100% exact, but to me, the Preen sounds better anyways. Instead of the limited feedback on one operator, you can crank the "Index Modulation" on every pair of Modulator>Operator. In a sense, its the modern iteration on the same concept + several different waveforms beyond sine. Like you mention, it also has a ton more features and can run 4 parts at once. There is also the Preen3 that doubles polyphony and has a big screen, but I have yet to build one that works.

If somebody wants dead on Dx7, but new, I think Korg just released a new Volca 2, don't know much about it. If you're cheap, the VST Dexed is also great.

Anyways, sorry for the topic divergence. I'm sure it will get back on track tomorrow!

It is on topic. We think DX7 for FM by default but i heard the volca2 doesn't load the DXed patches correctly neither and lays the decision at your feet; also reportedly a better sound.

Can't wait for MPCs answer to this.

When do updates usually drop, evening in Japan / morning is US?

Updates often around 2-3pm UK time. I believe much of Akai's marketing department are in the UK.
