i dont like that they dropped programs; so not sure how the equivalent of program edit works

well, that's exactly my thought. i'm loving all that i'm seeing of this new version BUT... man if programs have been dropped my entire liveset workflow has to be rethought! i was relying heavily on multiple tracks addressing single programs! it was one of the things i always LOVED about all mpc's i've had , since 2kxl!
well, i'll have to weight that against all the new goodness!

One can create a track type and use it as a resource, e.g. a Drum Track named "1".

One can then create MIDI tracks and as set their MIDI destination one selects "1". These MIDI tracks will now send the MIDI events to that first Drum Track named "1".

This may not quite restore the world, but it should work. :)

MIDI is clearly on the way out. If you noticed in the video, there were 7 tracks, and 6 out of those were audio tracks. Audio is so much better. With MIDI everything is one big track with no building blocks of any kind, but with audio you get at least sections. The hell with MIDI altogether! It's a 1980s technology. Audio is modern. Spotify is all audio, no MIDI!

Recorded audio existed way before MIDI, maybe 150 years ago... MIDI may be old, but audio is ancient.

Also, drum tracks in the MPC is played/triggered using MIDI. No MIDI, no drums.

MPC-Tutor wrote:Programs have not been ditched, they still exist as an entity outside of your projects as xpm files, e.g. drum kits and keygroup instruments.

When you load a program into mpc3 it’s effectively absorbed into the target track. So there’s no program hanging around in project memory, you just now edit the track instead via track edit (which is basically the old program edit)

I assume that, just like the force, you can still save programs as xpm files from a selected track (effectively ‘extracting’ the program data from the track), but also export the entire track as well (including all macros and various other settings) as an xtk file

One could even say that a drum track is the same as having a MIDI track pointing to an instance of a drum synth.

I mean, technically the "track data" equals MIDI events and the "drum setup" (samples and associated parameters) equals a drum program in an (unmentioned) plugin. And this is regardless of MPC version 2 or 3.

Like audio has done over its lifetime, MIDI is also updating, and so clearly not on the way out.

Much of the MPC wouldn't function without MIDI. It was even born from MIDI.

You like audio better, and I like both.

FYI, audio recording started over 150 years ago, MIDI over 40 years ago. If MIDI is a technology of the past, then audio is ancient.

Also, lots of music on Spotify was created using both MIDI and audio, not no MIDI!

And I get that some MPC users are going to miss some workflow changes.

But I like the move towards more of the things we expect working with a DAW. IMO, having an MPC Key 61 gives me a nicely integrated play, mix, arranger DAW-ish package that my head and my muscle memory can grow with.

This is the thing though. Many of us use mpcs because we don’t like making music in a DAW

I’m not complaining but I’m worried it won’t feel like an mpc. I could be wrong and it’ll be the best of both worlds but the concerns are legit and not just “hate”

Some of us want to use the MPC (X) as a music production center, almost like a kind of DAW thing.

Maybe I've missed it and some MPC 3 beta testers know it already: Is it possible to import and/or migrate MPC 2 projects?

Watch the next to last segment in the video (https://www.akaipro.com/mpc3.html) named "Legacy Project Import".

They changed the name from Midi Production Center to Music Production Center when they realized they couldnt properly finagle midi to work properly.

MIDI worked perfectly back then. The older hardware MPCs are excellent pattern sequencers, rock solid.

Or they changed it to music production because they might underestimated people who where making entire sampled based songs out of this machine. They hadnly drum sampling in mind that's why the early models had "kick-tom-hat" etc over each pad

Yamaha QY70 (QY700 Lil Brother) was my 1st piece of equipment, which led to the MOTIF...But Ultimately I traveled down the MPC path to Salvation! I would think that the MPC uses MIDI to sequence the Samples anyway. That's why it was called the MIDI PRODUCTION CENTER. Then Akai integrated more FX and Pre-Loaded Sounds in the Box...Which ultimately became a MUSIC PRODUCTION CENTER

No they changed it to 'Music Production Center' when the MPC4000 came out and had audio tracks and the full Z series sampler engine in it. MIDI was perfectly fine (in fact thats where the MPC's rep came from) and still isn't going anywhere. It was basically the start of the MPCs we have today, except for some reason InMusic went about 3000 steps backwards when they did it and seemed to use the MPC2000 as their base instead.

HouseWithoutMouse CAN’T be serious with that.
Just can’t.
