Phono in damaged?

Hello, today i wanted to test the Phono in with 4 (!) different turntables, but the sound was terrible thru the Phono in (hum and to loud / distorted).

I used turntables with ground and some without ground (numark pt01 etc.), also my smartphone was not good to sample. I also put a mixer between the turntable and the phono in, but it´s always the same.

The line in sound is good, everything is allright with this connection. Is my Phono in damaged?

Have you made a test, sampling from phono in / line in, to compare both?

Well the numark pt01 only has line level outputs, which means it has its own internal phono pre (amplifying the signal to line level and applying the RIAA curve), so you don't have to plug it into another phono pre (the mpc live's phono input).

Don't worry, we've all done stupid things

For turntables that have line level outputs, use a line level input.

Your smartphone headphone jack is also line level btw.

Hello and thank you! The first turntable, that i´ve connected to the phono in is a Technics SL-1210 M5G, the second was a Telefunken + Ortofon both have ground.

Massive hum on both

ps it´s only the left channel (the white one)

I have two 1200's. One of them is from 1988, and the other is a late 90's model. I often sample into the phono inputs and not ever encountered any issues.

I have had TWO different MPC live's and the phono in's on both were working as expected.

if you have tried with multiple gramophones and they all have the same lackluster sound on the LIVE, yours may indeed be faulty....

Not to derail your thread, but how is the Microkorg XL with the LIVE? Any of those tracks on your soundcloud is the combo?

Hello, the Line in works fine and the Microkorg xl made no problems and sounds good. In my first Demo-Beat i used the Korg for the 5 tracks you can see in the video

Did you try lowering the input gain on the live ?

yes, the right channel is 100% ok, but the left one not

line in works also fine, tomorrow i will bring to the service repair

yes, i am experiencing the same issue. and yes i did try to lower the input gain. the phono inputs are damaged. i am getting distortion sampling from my i phone. there has to be an issue. i paid too much money for this

iphone should be connected to line in. did you try a turntable into the phono in incl. ground?

One thing I know, is that you can’t turn the little input knob on the back up more than about halfway using phono. You can’t expect phono to sound like line level for one, it’s a completely different. A phono input is significantly weaker and requires significantly more amplification, thus the noise. Push the volume on whatever you’re feeding the input, but keep the volume knob on back no more than halfway when using phono and it will sound much better.
