i have both the live and X. if you ever want to use them on the same computer, you will need to install a separate instance for each machine (live /x).

if you open up the X app and you have the live connected, the software won't recognize it. same if you do it the other way around.

each time i opened up the respective app, i was asked to update it. so the update happened on its own. i did not go to the website to get the latest since i can just auto update from the program itself.

all that said, i don't use the daw--when i need to mass prune/copy paste a lot of files to the internal SSD (i installed), i just plug it up to the machine, run the program and then do my batch process on the files i want to add, remove, etc.

Maybe I've misunderstood the issue, but I have one installation of the MPC Software and can freely switch controllers (Live, Touch, Studio), even without having to relaunch the MPC Software. Just make sure you initially run the installer for each MPC you have, this ensures all the model-specific drivers are installed. This is on macos sierra.
