I don't know how this is possible:

yesterday evening I programmed a simple beat and shut down the MPC afterwards.

Today I start up my MPC LIVE (2.0.5), but now there's NOTHING left on my internal drive!!

All folders and projects I've made are lost! Even the factory content disappeared!!

There's nothing left that I can load into a new project, no drums, no instruments, no samples,...

What's wrong and please tell me this is something that can be fixed, otherwise I lost my whole live set and other projects...

I really need to know how this is possible. If it seems to be something random / unexpected bug / error, that means I can't rely on this 'LIVE' MPC Live at all... Damn I'm almost gonna regret this purchase...

THANKS for the help!!

Hope Akai will answer this time and won't wait for another 3 months...

Peace.
For starters this is not an offical Akai site. You should go to their site and to support. Let them know the issue.

As for the Akai content you can go to your account and download the Vault and any other content that you need.

As far as your tracks you made, probably gone forever, unless you get a computer forensic specialist to see if they can salvage your deleted files.

I never save any tracks on the Live, l immediately bounce into stems and take ii to my main computer and make copies.

Peace

Yo that's a good find.

I used this one and many other free ones throughout the years and have even recovered
across re-formatted re-partitioned partitions.

Loekazz, I mean this in the friendliest way possible, but you can barely blame Akai for the HD failure.
I mean…HDs die all the time. Every brand.
IMHO it doesn't make sense to save *any* precious work on *anywhere* if you can't make a backup of it.

We all learn to backup the first time we lose something precious.
I remember my first Mac many years ago…I rarely ever did backups. I thought HDs last for years.
A few days after the 1-year warranty expired, the HD of my Mac died and yeah, I lost a few album tracks.
Was massively, massively bummed, but could only blame myself, really.

Want to emphasize, don't want to be a dick…but this is the cold truth about HDs.

These days I back things up to two backup HDs a few times a week.

We see a few of "I LOST ALL MY WORK; FÜCK [company X]" on music forums every year, and it's not really the company's fault.
Seen a lot of "My Mac HD died and I lost all the photos from 6 years…f*ck Macs, will never buy a Mac again" type of posts on social media, and I always shake my head.

As far as I am aware, the firmware (linux and MPC software) is installed on the same 16GB drive as all the sounds, so it doesn't seem possible for that drive to have completely failed, not if the MPC is still booting up and functioning. I assume the drive is probably partitioned so it could be a corruption of the user partition. That in itself seems open to the possibility that this isn't necessarily a hardware issue, but potentially a software issue, perhaps the MPC is not shutting down correctly.

I've seen people with this problem state that they'd let the MPC battery completely die before this happened. Is that the case here, or did you shut down 'cleanly'?

Brass tacks, Akai provide no way to access the internal drive for back up purposes, so that speaks volumes on it's intended use. It's really nothing more than a 'read only' drive. Start saving all your work to an attached disk - you can get low profile USB 3.0 drives which only protrude a few mm out of the back of the unit. Backup that disk on a regular basis.

Either way this is clearly a warranty issue we've seen quite a few people with this same problem, so send it back and get them to send you a brand new unit.

A similar situation happened to me too. I figured out I had the wrong filter enabled in the browser menu. Once you enter the browser, look under the search bar and you will see 5 tabs. Tap the far right one if it isn't white already (if it is white then you probably do have some sort of HD failure.

If you already tried this then my mistake, just trying to help out anyway. :)

Good luck in getting this figured out and don't let it ruin your experience with Akai! Like everyone has said, always make backups, this is common with all hard drives.

I could not agree more with your posts sir.

I totally understand the OP is frustrated and needs to vent, but these machines are of good build quality and there are many many of these out in the wild, Ive both the live and X and have not had any issues with these first production run units (May and July purchased respectively).

Fanu wrote:Do you really think MPC boots from that HD?

Based on the leaked FCC innards, yes. The whole MPC is run from a single 'all in one' board that contains everything - 16GB storage, 2GB RAM, wifi, bluetooth, CPU etc - the whole board is designed to run the entire unit and I believe it is intended to install the firmware to the provided 16GB storage. I don't believe it has any additional/separate storage specifically for holding firmware.

This could also explain why Akai are not allowing external access to any of that drive, because if they did you would be able to access and potentially alter/delete OS and firmware files.

Also worth pointing out that the board they are using is long discontinued, don't know where they are getting them from or why it was discontinued, but there you go...
