Anybody have any idea how the hell the Network MIDI driver is used on a Mac?? My MPC is my main sequencer, and Im trying to track all 16 channels of MPC/Synths/Sampler/etc into Logic but I have to sync it to Logic since Im using the group outs 4 tracks at a time. When its time to multitrack I want to set the MPC to receive Start/Stop MMC and MIDI Clock from Logic and keep the MPC in time with Logic's time line. Cannot figure out for the life of me how to do this. I have it installed, I know Im supposed to use the AKAI - MIDI option (the DAW Control is for Ableton I guess?), but where do I tell the Mpc Live to use this?? Logic is set to send clock out to it, but nowhere in the MPC can I set it to use that port. I tried setting up a Network Session in AudioMIDI Setup but it cant connect to the MPC on whatever port it uses for the network stuff.

If it matters, Im on Wifi, so its possible it only works with Ethernet and nothing will show up until I have an ethernet connection but I would think it would too? The tiny bit in the manual about it said to use ethernet to make the connection 'tighter', so that kind of implies it works over Wifi too right?

I have no idea how but its half ass working now. I didn't know there was an actual app you had to open to get it to connect. Now that I opened that my Mac can see the Live on Wifi. The whole thing is completely **** though. Does AKAI even know what MIDI or sync even is or did that guy that loves to QUANTIZE in all their videos just learn about this shit watching Youtube videos? Im pretty sure that's how the programmers learned to code after this. The MPC can't send MMC for shit, and when it does get through it sends these weird bursts of it that freak Logic's arrangement the **** out. Transport commands don't work at all from MPC->Logic. The Logic side is almost working right. Play/stop work great, but how long it plays for is up to who knows what and when it does play I can hear things shuffling too fast out of time here and there like its having a little seizure (my 8th note hi hats are getting really annoying now hah). Sometimes it will play 16 bars, sometimes it will play until tick 40 and then just stops. Logic just keeps going but its like the MPC is constantly losing sync or maybe my Wifi is dropping who knows. I have the Network MIDI app open still and I haven't seen my IP address drop from it once since Ive been typing this at least. A couple times Logic threw up frame rate errors that the MPC wasn't keeping up. Maybe it all works perfect if you bend over and use Ableton like they want you to so they don't have to develop their own shit. It all works fine if I just stick to my MIDI instruments in standalone. Oh yeah the other transport commands are all weird too. I was just jumping from bar to bar in Logic, and the MPC's time was freaking out and jumping around to 128.1.1 and back again.

If anybody can try it with a wired ethernet connection and let me know, Ill spring for an adapter. But if this is how it goes, man Akai/inMusic you **** suck, give the name back to the Japanese guys that actually knew what they were doing already. Maybe JJ needs a job, he can come run circles around your devs or something.

EDIT: HAH I got it to actually go to 19:4:720 just now before it crapped out and stopped. Man the thing sounds like it was drunk or something. The sync was so bad, the quick rushes and then total lethargic 'GET YOUR FINGER OFF THE RECORD' slowing down moments. Holy crap what happened to the former kings of MIDI sequencers??

I don't believe that Logic supports Ableton Link. You need to use Reason, Bitwig, Serato DJ or something compatible. You should look into the Yamaha MD-BT01 Bluetooth Wireless MIDI Interface, it works for MAC with keyboard and on the MPC LIVE/X. Not sure if it send transport control, but you never know.

I don't think this uses Ableton Link, this is just plain old MIDI over network stuff. Apparently Wifi is horrible according to someone on Gearslutz. He was monitoring his own connection and said the timing of it is laughable and basically unusable over Wifi, but then a couple others said it works great, with Ableton of course. Might just get a cheap USB-ethernet adapter and try it this weekend. If I cant get this to work, this basically just ruins my whole new setup around the MPC. I can only track 4 channels at a time back into Logic, and Ive got a full 20 channels I need to capture and keep synced up. My only other option is to redo my entire MIDI setup, run everything back into my old AMT8, set it up for standalone operation, and then use it with Logic once Im done writing and ready to record.

Well this has nothing to do with pad control or production or Ableton Link, just syncing the MPC with Logic, with Akai's own Network MIDI driver.

Thats what Im saying haha. Im just trying to record the thing INTO my DAW not use it as one! I mean, this is the way everybody used their MPC2000/3000/60/etc isn't it??
It worked great then, in fact they worked better than most MIDI devices as far as sync goes. I might have an old USB ethernet adapter laying around somewhere to try, if not I might just buy one if its cheap enough. Ive only heard people say the sync works fine over Wifi when they're using Ableton Live, but Ableton also has its own separate network port too. There are two MIDI ports, Akai MIDI Network, and Akai DAW Control. I guess DAW Control is specifically for Ableton, the MIDI Network one is generic MIDI for everything else.

Its not that tough actually, but they don't tell you jack shit about it so you have to pretty much figure out what to do on your own haha. Basically you just make sure either ethernet or Wifi is turned on in the MPC and make sure it has an address. Open the Akai Network MIDI app on your Mac/PC and use "Add a device" to put in the Live's IP address. It takes a second or two, but eventually the app will see it and it will show up in the list. After that, in your DAW you'll find two new MIDI inputs/outputs, the AKAI Network MIDI (I think thats what its called) and AKAI DAW Control. The DAW Control driver is for the Live Control I think, Im just using the regular network MIDI one. After that the two will talk to each other as best as they can.

I actually had it working way better this morning. Im pretty sure I killed it last time I tried, but I MAY have left my torrent client running when it was being ****. I still cant get it to sync through an entire song but today it was getting about halfway through before it would lose it. Im chalking that up to Wifi being shit in general. My VPN shouldn't affect anything locally connected but I turned that off as well just in case and everything was a hell of a lot better this morning. It was good enough I said **** it and ordered a USB Ethernet adapter to try out. It was only $15, that was alot cheaper than I thought haha. I should've just bought one last week and been done.

Ill be able to try it out Friday, then Ill see if I can do passes in Logic and multitrack all my shit. I was gonna just record a mix down straight out of my mixer, but hardware wise Im loaded on effects, but missing all my tools like compressors.

Hope it works out for you. Let us know your results.

Well shit, screw wifi get a USB-ethernet adapter and the shit works GREAT! It was kinda wonky at first but eventually it kicked in. I plugged it straight into my Mac Pro. The Mac Pro had its 169.254 address, and I gave the MPC one as well. Couldn't talk. Tried this a few times, the Network MIDI app just couldn't find it.
Tried setting the Mac Pro to a 192.168.0.1 addy. Went to set the MPC to 192.168.0.2, and the MPC had already auto connected with a 169 address. I changed it to the 192, and all of a sudden it popped up in the Network MIDI app at the 169 address all on its own, I didn't have to add it or anything. I didn't touch it, just left it alone and said screw it. Set up Logic to send clock and MMC to the AKAI Network MIDI port, set the MPC to sync to clock and receive MMC, shit worked perfectly for both the songs I just tracked into Logic. Didn't skip a beat or slow down once. Still have no luck sending MMC from the MPC to Logic though. Logic freaks the **** out when you do send any transport commands from the MPC, so I have no clue if thats ever gonna work. I know it aint Logic, cause MMC worked fine from my BeatStep Pro and MPD226.

The adapter Im using is a cheap little $15 one by Cable Matters I got off Amazon. Its one of the only ones that said it didn't need drivers for anything, its completely class compliant. Works great. Even the Amazon branded ones (that cost more?) required drivers so those are a no go, as were most of the ones I looked at. They all worked without drivers in Windows 8/10 but Mac and Linux need drivers for just about every one of em, so they won't work with the MPC I think.
