Hi, just got a mpc one and loving lots about it but one thing just seems difficult to understand and I dont know whether you can do this. I don't understand how the slices when slicing a sample do affect the way it is played.

1. When slicing a loop and setting every endpoint of the slice to sample end will the slice get played as one sample (eg same tempo once the slice is triggered) or will the following events of tve audiofile I marked with slicemarkers be played according to their position in tve sample? So if I have a drzmloop with an original tempo of 500 bpm and my second slice starts at tve first snare of the loop and plays till the end how does the mpc play tve complete slice?
2nd Slice starting with the snare, sequencer is at 100 bpm
1. The slice is playing at the original speed the sample is recorded at
2. The slice is playing at the tempo set in the sequencer (in this example 100 bpm) but is not stretched just starting the following slices set in the loop accordingly (while pressing pad2)
3. The tempo of the slice can be changed by warp or time stretch settings
4. The tempo of the slice can be changed by pitch.

I hope this makes sense.

There are 4 possible ways of how a slice could behave when triggered

Playing the original sample withou affecting any playback - so the speed of the sample would be wrong and it just starts when the pad is hit

Playing the original sample but keeping note distances correct (when played slower you push pad the the slice starts playing until the first slice is finished, then short break until the next slice of tve sample is played (even if just playing a slice and not the whole sample)

Playing the sample starting correct and playing the rest of the sample / slice in a tempo set with warp or time stretch

Playing the sample at the right pitch but not in time but could be pitched up or down to affect playback speed to match song tempo

I hope this makes sense.
The reason I am asking is that I used to make breakbeat and preferred chopping the loop into c3 complete loop c#3 loop starting with the second drum (usually a hat) of the loop, d3 loop starting with third drum (snare or clap) and so on. With the 950 I had to pitch the whole keygroup to match the tempo. The disadvantage was a different pitch, the advantage was proper transients as pitching up or down doesnt take information away or adds information on the 950 and just changing the clock speed of tve da converter.
I also used recycle where the slices got triggered by tve midifile created of the slicesin the loop. This worked ok but I usually found myself adjusting the pitch later anyway
I didnt use timestretched slices so far but I would love to be able to set slices, play in midinotes and adjust pitch, timestretch and turn on / off "trigger rest of slice according to following slice infosin the loop.
If this was possible it would be easy to program the rythm and edit all slices in time stretch, pitch etc. I kbow that I can copy a sample onto each pad individually but this would mean I would have to edit every si gle pad once a change is made. I would prefer to just edit the main / rootsample and all slices behave accordingly.

Oh and I have another question.
As the 950 certainly adds charakter to the sound which sounds would you recommen me to just play with the mpc, which ones to sample into tve s950, export amd import into the mpc one and which ones to keep being played by tve 950?
I love the sound of the 950 and I think it is less the converters but the op amps before the ad converters which sound really nice when being driven a bit.

Regarding your questions about slicing; I can highly recommend you read the manual, read it again. Go to sleep, and read it another time.

That is really a matter of personal choice and opinion. I'd suggest you go and try, work and experiment with it. You can only base this decision on your own conclusions and liking.

Thats a Loaded Post. My Suggestion is to go head load the Sample, Chop it Up, Experiment, play wit the settings.
2nd.....YouTube is a Treasure Trove of Knowledge. Watch the Videos back to back. Its a lil easier to answer your questions while watching the Videos.

To kinda answer some of ya questions...You can Apply your sliced samples to a Seperate Program, and Fine tune each slice. Tempo, Pitch, Time Stretch...etc

Hi, thanks for your answer. It was quite late yesterday and my questions not well chosen.
Regarding samples and assigning them to pads inside programs I have the following questions:
1. In the manual it says on page 64 that samples get loaded into programs. So the sample pool is not globally but exclusive for each program?
2. When setting slicemarkers within the sample edit page is there any way to store just the sample with the markers or does it have to be assigned to a program to be stored? I am asking as I would then make a directory with all samples I have set the markers for so I dont have to do it again if I want to use the sample in another track
3. If I manually assign a sample to different pads within a drumprogram and I change something on the original sample inside sample edit will those changes be reflected for all pads the sample was assigned to?
4. What do I have to do so the sample will follow the songtempo after setting the slicemarkers? Also once it plays at the sequencertempo will changing start and endpoint affect what tempo the mpc thinks the sample originally plays or can I just type in 125 bpm regardless of how long the sample is as long as the startpoint of the sample (or the first slice?) Is the musical start of the loop?

For the s950 I suppose it makes sense for breaks to sample those (0db +3db +6db or so) hit playback and sample back into the mpc as there wont be any transposemagic happening once they are either pitched upto speed inside the 950 or decided to adjust speed different than pitching.
For bass it does make sense to play through the 950 as it gets pitched up and down which does sound really smooth on the 950 as does the filter. The same goes for pads and strings. Not sure how good the mpc's agorithms saturate but I suppose it wont be anywhere near something like decapitator or a driven preamp or something like an oto boum. Nlt sure about this. Obviously the idea of using the mpc as much as possible is quite nice. So mybe I will use the samples of the mpc and once the idea is ready to get tracked into ableton I can trigger the s950 for those sounds and send them through the desk and some other hardware before tracking.
Not sure about drums though. The mpc offers quite a lot for doing drums. As I tend to tune most drums I will pitch them up or down which sound way better on the s950 due to changing the clockspeed of the converter instead of doing a kind of timestretch/pitchshift internally which i find tends to mess upthe transients when compared to changing clock speed. What would you recommend? Again setting up in the 950 and sampling into the mpc after pitching/tuning?

1...Sample Pool is what it is...A Pool of Samples loaded into Ram to choose whatever programs you want to load them into..

2. Slice Markers in the Chop Tab of the Sample Edit Page, are designed to Convert to Program. Not sure if the Slice Markers will save without assigning them to a program or not...(Never tried it)

3. Yes

4...Warp Feature

The answer to this is simple: Try it. What do you like best? There you go.

You could also just make everything on the mpc, and then run it through the 950. Or just the drums or special parts, and resample it.

Yes I suppose it sounds like making things complicated.
I am npt into hiphop but goi g back from tech house to breakbeat and jungle which i did ages ago using a hardware setup. The beats get programmed with single drumshots and underneath a couple of chopped breaks are playing. Some chops play mord than just one single hit so the timing of the sounds inside the chops is crucial. Ussualy for breakbeat i would manually chop c1 complete loop c#1 loop starting on snare d3 loop starting on hat etc, trigger the whole loop on desired tempo and pitch until it loops correctly and then apply the pitch to all slices and everything is playing in sync to the tempo. For jungle i used to recycle the loop and copy bits out of the midofile and rearrange those, quantize and groovequantize to the original midifile to keep the loops groove and i can change pitch by transposing as well as pitchshif and the loop still plays in sync. Anyway I think I will just play around a bit. Bought the mpc mainly to record the output of my toraiz squid which doesnt have a song mode. The audiofunctions are more like an addon I am becoming more interested to use since buying it as I track into live anyway for mixing.
Thanks for helping !

I kind of figured you were into this stuff by how you described using the sampler for drumbreaks. Reminded me of this youtube video of photek explaining his workmethod..

Just remember there is no ''right'' way. You can make those beats in a different million types of way. Photek is (assuming) probably not working this way for years anymore!

Personally, i **** hate it to be sticked to one way of working. Sometimes i use my MPC for drums, sometimes the TR-8, sometimes ableton.

One last question.
So I have a loop loaded and slicemarkers set. How can i listen to the sample in sync with the sequencer without setting midinotes (like previewing recycle files in ableton is synced) also when assigning to one pad bpm sync on its own doesnt do a thing without warp activated and then i have timestretching with artefacts :(
