Hello,
So I've got a Nord Electro 6D hooked up to an MPC One. If I run USB out from the keyboard to the MPC, I can get everything working without any special configuration. I play the keys and the MPC registers those incoming MIDI signals to produce sounds using the plugin instruments for a given track. I record the some notes into an MPC sequence, and with an audio track monitoring the audio output from the keyboard I can hear those MIDI notes interpreted using the Nord's sounds as well.
However, if I try to use MIDI cables instead of USB, I can't get the audio monitoring trick to work. I have MIDI out from the keyboard an into the MPC, that works as expected. Playing the Nord keys produces MPC plugin sounds on a track. But even though I have MIDI out from the MPC to the Nord, I don't get the Nord producing any sounds in response to the MPC's MIDI signals.
Swapped the cables, same results. When I use USB, the MPC's MIDI device registry displays "Nord Electro" in its list. But when I'm using MIDI cables, the registry just reads "Remote". I have to assume that "Remote" is just the arbitrary name assigned to any MIDI device run through the MIDI ports.
Is there...any special trick to this? Or a reason that I shouldn't expect it to work? Every time I've seen people using the MPC as a controller for external synths they're using USB, but I'd rather use the MIDI ports in this case - only because the cable lengths are more convenient in my studio.
