Send transport commands from mpc without starting the sequze

Hi,
does anyone know if there is a way to send transport commands uing the the mpc one without starting the internal sequencer?
I am now hooking an oscilloscope onto the midi out and see what I get but if anyone knew it would save me a lot of time I suppose.
I also dont quite understand what remote is for.
