Recording Automation

My Plan was to use Automation on all of my programs. I wanted to experiment using the submix to achieve this. I wanted to insert the XYFX effect in Submix 1 and route all of my programs(ie. no XYFX added) through sub 1. when I try to record automation, nothing happens until I insert the XYFX in the actual program.

Why can't I run all of my programs through Sub 1 so I can easily add automation on the fly?

Submixes and returns don't have dedicated tracks to record automation to in at least up to version 2.9.x.

Maybe this will change in the future, but for now it is a limitation of using sub/ret tracks.
