Hi all, I'm new to the world of MPC but experienced with sampling and music production in general. I have a MPC ONE that I intend to use for live performance and have started to learn and prepare for that.

I have a program with samples triggered as on-shots from the pads. Most often in a series of samples the "new" sample/pad will mute the previous sample/pad set up as the "mute target". However I would sometimes like it to have a bit of release when turned off. How can I achieve that? Thanks!

When a pad is muted it stops dead, there is no release available, that pad is effectively no more. 'Release' is only available when 'note on' pads are released.

You could use a subtle reverb or delay on the program perhaps.

Not applicable to your specific problem, but you could trigger a separate release sample by combining NOTE OFF and simultaneous play as per my tutorial here:

Thanks! Ok, sorry I'm new at the terminology, "note one" pads mean I have to press the pad down with my finger all the time until I release and it stops?

Is the no way to trigger a sample and have it kling off when released except for to hold my fingers on it until released? I don't have enough fingers to hold all the pads..

I have used reverb on some samples which helps with the release but I don't want reverb on all of them.

EDIT: release samples could be an option but some samples does not sound the same all the time so a general release sample would not really be an option for those because I don't know when the sample will be released.

For example one song I’m working on now has four different string chords which works fine as one shots because they are just a quarter note with a natural decay of a couple of seconds.

Then it’s a melody line on two different sounds (synth and brass) where each new note mutes the previous. Would be nice to not have the notes stop immediately but with a bit of decay because it would sound more natural and also to avoid clicks.

Then there’s also a kind of processed choir loop which goes over the choruses. This one need to be shorter sometimes and to have a natural tail when stopped.

Add polyphony to the program ( 4 or even 8 ) and add some release time.

For samples that you want to loop endlessly (like some ambient drone), consider an external trigger like a Launchpad where you set a pad as "toggle".

Thanks, is it possible to set the MPC pads as ”toggle”? What do you mean by add polyphony to the program? It is already polyphonic?
