Retroactively create programs

The beauty of the mpc is that it can be used in many different ways.

For instance, I've been using my live 2 (and 1) and previously the One, so that each pad is a sample or key group or plugin, to build up tracks that I can then mix with my octatrack mk2 when doing live stuff.

This has worked well for me and bar the load times it's been the best solution I've found.

Recently I've been delving deeper into my mk2 and looking for ways to take just one device out with me.

Reading the guidance here and elsewhere on how to do this has had me scratching my head-importing the sqx data into the next sequence has worked but getting the actual sounds from another project was not happening.

Until this evening when I realised that my workflow was the issue and not my understanding of the importing - ie I've not been creating SEPERATE programs for each element of my track/project.

So I sketched up a couple of very basic tracks with drums in their own program, bass in its own and so forth. Imported the sxq file into an empty project, then the individual programs and viola everything is there.

Excellent. I now understand this and how to get it to work for me in the future.

Now comes my question-as I now have a plethora of projects I've made that have not been allocated a program for each element, is there a way for me to go into each of these and separate each into its own program?

Ideally it would be a case of selecting the pads each sample is on and they go into a program but I'm guessing that isn't going to happen!

Are you saying all your elements are loaded as samples into one drum program on one track? Sounds like you want to use the explode option from track edit.

Yep that's exactly it mate-one program and each track I rename to the sample I've assigned to it (kick, hat, bass etc)

If I explode, then I'll have the same samples duplicated and renamed- Xxx-Kick etc. Would I then create a new progr with all the drum parts, then one with bass etc, and then delete the originals? Or mute or something along those lines?

Oh my bad. Explode only explodes the midi to new tracks but they all use the same program. I think you are stuck with having to do it manually by duplicating the program and then removing the elements you don't want in that program. Or you can create a bunch of programs and use the copy pad function to separate each one.

Or you you can create the programs then use the assign sample page. Looking at it right now, I can see that the assign sample page would be the most painless way. You create all your programs first then go to the assign samples page. From there you can rapidly scroll through your programs and drag your samples to a pad quickly.

Alternatively you can use MAIN > Program row pencil > 'Copy Pads' to copy pads to different programs.

However, you don't need separate programs for each element. Separate tracks, yes that's a good idea when it comes to mixing and exploding, but a lot of people will have a single 'kit' containing all the core components of a beat, especially those used to a legacy MPC workflow where there were no keygroups or plugins etc.

I'm not saying you shouldn't have separate programs, but if you already made the beat with a single program, it's not really necessary to go to all the trouble of splitting it up into multiple programs, you can still mix individual elements using the pad mixer, track mix, and sub mixes etc.

The separate programs is only needed for creation a project with multiple tracks I'm importing though, right?
