Best way to orgainze plugin presets?

I'm finding the organizing of the plugin presets really confusing.

Hype for example. I create a pretty cool patch in there, and when in Program Edit, hit the save icon. Is there a place to save these presets so the preset name shows in the program>preset (main view). Also can they be selected from the presets side menu? They always show up as "default" in the preset name (i can't see a way to change that). They never show up in the side preset selection popout.

As of now, I just save them in a folder I created on the SD. This is fine, but I always end up forgetting these patches exist, because they have to be loaded from browser.

Another way I've done it is to save the actual program itself, as an xpm, which can be useful because it saves your additional program settings. But again, the preset has no name, and it gets lost in the clutter.

I'm probably missing something obvious here.

You can do it on the software.

Lias hype, select a preset, customise to taste. Then at the top of the plugin windows, click on the cog, just to the right if the preset name box, hit save preset, then you get a new window where you can select location and name it. Save it to the plugins default location so that your preset shows up in the plugin preset list, right at the bottom under User.

You can also do it on the hardware, same as above but click the folder icon, next to preset name box to bring up save options window

One thing I noticed is that (standalone) always adds “user“ at the beginning of the preset name, which I believe makes the machine internally classify the preset to the User folder when looking through presets. This is handy, but I feel like all of my presets end up there whether I leave that text at the beginning of the file name or not.

Saving the program can be good too if you have customized Q-links, but it isn’t browsable in the same way in the plugin presets. You need to load programs separately the way you load drum or keygroup programs.

I guess I’m saying that I too don’t know if a good way to do this…

Ahhh thanks for the replies. Yes, it seems the issue was that I was saving the presets on the SD card. The only way it seems to show up in the side bar list is to save them on the default internal folder.

You can add your own presets to a custom folder for all the newer synths (the ones on external disk, such as Odyssey).

1. Mount your MPC disk in your computer and go to the Synths folder.
2. Enter 'WayOutWare - MPC - Odyssey' and go inside the 'Presets' folder.
3. Create a folder inside - call it whatever you want, the MPC will ignore this, we'll use it or organisation purposes only.
4. Save your custom Odyssey presets inside that custom folder.
5. Important: name presets to something like '10000-Custom Folder-Lead-My Patch.xpl'

The 'gotchas':

The number at the start is important. It must be higher than any existing factory preset, and unique for each preset. Two presets with the same number is bad news. Unfortunately this is a bit hacky and could cause problems if third party developers use the same starting number as you (or each other). also pick a number much higher than the current presets number on the assumption Akai might add more in the future.

The 'Custom Folder' bit is what will show as the initial category in the patch list (so I might set it to "MPC Tutor"). The second bit ('Lead') is the sub category. so with the above example, when you bring up the presets list you'll see the 'Custom folder' category show up with all the other existing categories. Double tap and inside you'll see a sub folder called 'Lead' and inside that will be your preset. You can of course skip the sub categories.

You can also completely skip the number, but if you do that then the MPC will ignore your categories and just shove the preset on the initial presets category list, so it's not sustainable for lots of presets.

You can also skip the custom folder, so 100000-Lead-My Lead Patch.xpl will appear in the existing factory 'lead' category

You can also do this with synths like Tubesynth, but you'll need to create a Tubesynth folder inside the Synths folder, i.e 'AIR Music Technology - MPC - TubeSynth'. Inside create a 'Presets' folder and follow the same as above. However, this will override your factory presets. To overcome this, make a copy of your tubesynth factory presets (found on your computer in the application support folder...) and put them inside the tubesynth presets folder on your disk (you can put them inside a 'Factory' sub folder if you wish, just to keep it tidy).

This is all very hacky and hopefully akai will sort out something more appropriate in the future!

These are good tips. I'm wondering, I would really like to never see the original Odyssey presets again. Is there a way to either delete or ignore them? Right now I'm trying to get rid of that default preset to replace it with one to my own liking.

I just created a folder called 'Presets' on my SD card & then individual folders for the particular plugins to save presets into.
