Hello everyone,

experimenting with different swing settings, I moved to the question, if there is a possibility to select every second note (for example in the grid view if you have only notes in one line for a hat for example) to apply the swing of the TC function only on them. I tried also different Time Division settings (also triplets), but if the notes are on the syncope (2,4,6,8 in 8th) it will move all of them somewhere. If i move them forward on 1,3,5,7 i can use 8th triplet to apply swing on every second note. Then I have to move them back manually. Very complicated for doing something, that is a common swing behavior. Or did I miss something or have a thinking blockade... ;-)? How are you aplying a classic swing pattern (like the "Linn-Swing") on MPC x, ONE or Live?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best Regards, Matt

Swing is swing, there is no variation of it. It's exactly the same as it always has been since Linn first designed it by moving every even 16th note. Thats the 'magic' MPC Swing and thats how it works.

If you want to do it easily just have same sample of two pads and use first one for 1 3 5 7 and second one for 2 4 6 8 - you can then use TC on selected one easily - also you can use program edit to adjust effects/tonality of the sample for added flexibility

Quantize and swing are always applied simultaneously. This is annoying in non-quantized patterns...

Swing is based on quantization. You can fiddle with additional TC parameters (strength, window) to get it more subtle for unquantized recordings. Additionally list edit can be used to adjust selected events to be surgical about it.

Quantization definitely has a hand in it. Swing will ONLY work if you have 16th notes, and they have to be the right 16th notes too, otherwise swing will completely skip over it because it only shifts the even 16th notes. If you want to make any other notes 'swing' you have to edit it by hand.

No you cant, unless you're going even lower and using 32nds or 64ths, thats not how "Swing" works at all on the MPC. As I already said, there is no magic about swing, its dead simple. All the even number SIXTEENTH notes are delayed by a percentage related to the first one. Thats the EVEN 16th notes, meaning no eighth note falls on the positions that 'swing'. Swing ONLY works when you have 16th notes in the right positions on the grid, otherwise it does absolutely nothing.

You can go look it up and read it coming directly from Roger Linn's mouth if you really need to.

Thanks a lot for your explanations and tips! I finally managed to understand how "swing" works in MPC (thanks monotremata) and that my idea of a "swingy groove" is not working by applying the MPC Swing on it (which is nevertheless very nice and well known of course). I have to edit it manually and with using different Pads for the different notes (thanks handthrow) it is not so complicated to manage. I think even better would be to practise so long, that you are able to play it swingy without quantization like in ancient times. I'm working on it.

Now - maybe AKAI can't do it - the ACCESS Virus can do swing - even on halfbars - makes little sense, but it does it.
Resolution 1/2, Swing Factor 75% (e.g.)

- Edit - OK if just put one on every 1 of the beats - nothing happens - true.

See below on Soundcloud - will be deleted in a few days ;-)
