Recording to a Mac without a separate interface

Can’t seem to find anything online (or print) for this question…

If I want to record what I’m doing on my MPC directly to my laptop (using my recording software) is there any way to do it without having to use an interface like Focusrite etc?

I read that the usb (b) port is an output but when I go from MPC directly to my laptop, my recording software doesn’t pick up a signal.

I’m in standalone mode. If the answer is flipping to controller mode, will I still be able to record everything I’m doing (live) on the MPC such as muting tracks (track mute page) and going into each track’s effect to tweak it in real time?

No USB audio out in standalone mode. Without a separate interface on your laptop your best option is to go to controller mode at which point your MPC will be available to your recording software as an audio 'input' option. And yes, everything you do in standalone mode is there in controller mode as well, so you can record all your live mutes and FX tweaks etc.

If your recording software is a DAW that supports VSTi another option is to insert the MPC VST plugin version to an instrument track in your DAW and record that way.

but option 1 is probably the easiest to set up.

Does your MAC have an headphone jack socket ?

You can record directly . Your Mac does have a not so bad audio interface, integrated.

Plug the output of MPC ( headphones out with mini jack 1/8" , or output 1 and 2 with a double mono 1/4" jack to a 1/8 " TRS (stereo) mini jack.

On your MAC press alt and the volume/speaker icon in the upper tray bar, on right corner... Several audio options will open : "Use this port for .. output ... input ... " .. if you use it as an input, you can record the Audio out of MPC to your mac ...

Select this input in your DAW and record. You can access this directly with your "AUDIO AND MIDI CONFIGURATION " in your MAc system / preferences apps. But ALT + Speaker / volume icon is a very clever shortcut to switch from using the headphones jack of your mac as in input or output .

Possible with the Mac built in audio, but IMO would make a lot more sense use the better quality interface inside your MPC that will work completely digitally via a single USB cable.

It's right ... better sounding with less AD/DA conversions using controller mode ... I've given this audio Mac trick that i use a lot for sketching ideas out of my synths and anything when I'm not at studio or home.. it's sometimes musically good to record the output of mpc , with live playing and no syncing to other devices...
