Bit of a backstory: I recently discovered my MPC Live 2 could connect to audio interfaces. I dug out my 15 year old Edirol UA101 - plugged in my MPC and a couple of synths and boom - I could route my synths through the mixer on the MPC, I could apply the MPC's internal effects to my synthesisers and I could change the routing to send an output from the MPC or from a synth to an external effects unit, back in to the audio interface and out through the master output.
This was a revelation because I no longer need a (fairly useless) analogue mixer as all of my mixes and eqing could now be done within an MPC AND saved on a per-project basis.
Trouble was I needed 16 channels+ and the UA101 only has 6 line-ins. So I bought an ESI U168 XT which has 16 ins and 8 outs - only it's not a class compliant device so does not work with the MPC which I did not know at the time. I've now replaced this with a Zoom L-20R which looks, on the surface, to be a great device.
The problem I face now is that the routing is extremely confusing. I can see the synth tracks affecting the VU meters on the MPC's Audio Tracks Mixer however 'Out 1,2' to 'Out 31,32' does not seem to go anywhere and / or I can't see how this is routed back out of the L-20. The only way I can hear any sound is if I turn the mixer levels up on each channel using the Zoom Control iPad app - but then I just get the 'raw' input, not what is sent into the MPC.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
