When would Automation not be recordable?

Hey all,

- I've got a Roland TB-03 hooked up to my MPC One via midi out.
- I went to MPC Preferences and set the Midi sync parameters to control the TB03.
- Using Q-link Program mode I set the Parameter to the TB03's midi CC for Cut Off (74)
- I armed the Automation icon (turning it red.)
- I hit play. The MPC started playing the TB03, and I started twisting the Q-link knob. Which was in fact controlling the Cut off on the Tb03.

Everything was working great. Other than, when I tweak the Q-link knob it doesn't record my movements.

So just to test it I went to the MPC piano roll screen, opened up the automation section below and drew in some movement. And that worked! The MPC was then controlling the Cut Off on the TB03.

So what step am I forgetting? WHY won't the MPC let me record the automation.

Maybe external midi isn’t classified as “automation”. Maybe try overdubbing the knob turning?

Yeah, that's my work-around. Jamming one of three external synths at a time, recording that performance, then working on the next part. I was just hoping the MPC would record some of the "knob tweaking," while I took care of the rest. So that I could jam and record one entire performance.

Yes same answer. External midi cc is recorded as automation only by using overdub button ( as rec would erase the previous notes)

Its not possible by classic infernal automation .
I record external midi CC and internal automation at the same time, using overdub + automation Button ( red rec)

"Automation" in MPC is about internal parameters, for external MIDI devices automation is recorded as regular MIDI data, so you need to record that as any other MIDI data - select MIDI program, correct input/output, arm the track, press record/overdub.

Also make sure the device you want to automate supports parameter change via MIDI. Some gear can only respond to MIDI data related to notes to play.

All of a sudden it's working! And I'm not sure what changed. Other than some midi settings on the TB-03. But I don't see how that would keep the MPC from recording Q-link automation.

****UPDATE
-If you're recording automation via the Q-link controls of anything internal (plugins, samples, etc....) 1st tap the Automation icon and change it from green to red, then hit Play and tweak way. (No need to be in OVER DUB)
-When you want to record MIDI CC automation linked to an external synth or device. Arm the Automation dial and hit the red Over Dub button before playing. Then tweak away.
