Hi everyone. Recently I've bough an MPC Live 2 (my first MPC) and I love it! I am still learning its modes, options and features. Now I've experienced some strange behavior that confuses me and I wanted to ask you guys if you could give me some more insight on my issue.
So let's start with the scenario. I have sampled a part of a soul track. It is approx. 1 minute long. In sample edit mode I've chopped it in a way I need it (each slice was around 1.5-2 sec.). Than I've converted it to a drum program using pad parameters. I like the pad parameters option since it is a little more flexible IMO and if I accidently change slices in sample edit mode it doesn't mess up my drum program. So far, so good. Than I realized that I needed to loop a specific pad to play if for a specific length. Thus in program edit mode I've enabled "Note On" for it and enabled the pad loop option. I've adjusted the loop parameter accordingly. So far everything worked as expected. I trigger the pad and it plays the loop like forever. Now I wanted to adjust the pad envelop, especially the release time. Well and this is where my confusion starts. The release was set to 0 by default but still the looped pad played like forever as soon as I trigger it. Adjusting any envelop parameters had almost no effect, except of attack. I couldn't figure out how I can get an envelop curve that works as I would expect it. It drove me crazy. Even if I set decay & sustain to low values, where I would expect an immediate choke in volume... nope. The sample plays like forever. And after a couple of seconds the volumes starts to get lower. Almost like there was some kind of delay in the envelop curve.
Just for fun I've taken the original sample, that still had my original slices, and did another convert to drum program. But this time I've used the "non-destructive slice" option. Thus this program is almost identical to the previous one, except it uses the slice mode for pads. I've repeated the steps mentioned above for the mentioned pad/slice. Thus I've set it to "Note On", I've enabled "Loop" and adjusted the "Loop" parameter. Again I've adjusted the envelop and... surprise... this time it works exactly like expected. I could adjust the envelop accordingly and have gotten the result I wanted like in a few seconds.
So please tell me. What am I doing wrong in the "pad parameters" scenario. Why does the envelop behave so strange? I almost assume that in this setup the software takes the length of the whole sample (thus apporx. 1 minute in this case) as a reference instead of the start and end range of the pad. While in non-destructive slice mode it seems to take the start and end range of the slice for length reference.
I think for now I will switch so the non-destructive slice mode in my workflow until I figure out how to use envelopes properly in the other mode :/
