MPC One won't connect to Addictive Drums 2 (Mac M1 Ventura)

I have an MPC One, and would like to set it up for fingerdrumming using Addictive Drums 2. But I cannot for the life of me understand how this is done.

Here's what I am doing
1. run MPC in controller mode and open Addictive Drums
2. in AD2: Audio & Midi setup: "Active MIDI inputs MPC One Public & MPC One Port 1"
3. I am selecting the drum and then hitting Learn and then hitting the corresponding pad. I can see that the MPC software recognizes the hit (virtual pad icon lights up), but the AD2 software shows NO INDICATION that anything has happened. It obviously knows there is an MPC in the chain, because it recognizes it as an active MIDI input. But nothing. No sound, nothing to show.

I have made sure that the speaker out is Macbook Pro Speakers, which is the same in the MPC software.

Anything seem out of place in my setup?

Have you tried assigning the addictive drums vst or au to a plugin track in the mpc software? This will definitely work as long as you've scanned the vst in preferences > plugins

Honestly, I don't exactly know what your comment is telling me to do: I am THAT challenged with the software. Is there a place in the current version of the Bible that covers this?

I just tried preferences > plugins > scan all and nothing show up (AD2 is open).
Then I check "audio units" and scan again. AD2 shows up, but I don't know what to do with it! It doesn't change anything, the pads don't learn, and no sound shows up. ARRRRGHHH!

I don't really cover much of the software in the MPC Bible as it's mostly for standalone use, but chapter 24 covers setting up the MPC Software for VST and AU plugins.

So in the preferences > plugins screen you are scanning your computer's plugin folders so the MPC Software can discover any existing VST and AU plugins on your system, these could be effects or instrument plugins (like addictive drums).

Before scanning, make sure you've selected the checkbox to the left of the pre-filled VST folder paths. Then once you scan your VSTs will also be picked up.

After scanning, head back to the main screen and change the track type in the current sequencer track to 'plugin'. Now click on the 'Plugin' drop down and choose AudioUnit > XLN Audio > Addictive Drums (press select) . This will assign an instance of addictive drums to the plugin program assigned to that track. Now click on the little pop up window icon next to the plugin name and it will open up the Addictive Drums plugin interface - select a kit.

At this point you can play the MPC pads and it will trigger sounds (you'll have to configure pad perform appropriately - set it to 'custom' or chromatic and find the correct pad bank that triggers the appropriate midi notes (I assume kick will be C1, snare D1 etc). No MIDI learn required, you are just playing a MIDI instrument like you would any other MIDI instrument (e.g. synth, keygroup etc). You can also use an attached keyboard.
