Modern MPCs and internal CMOS backup batteries

Just curious. I’ve been thinking about this since shortly after I bought my MPC X in spring 2019 and had it replaced (original was defective/kept crashing intermittently) by Akai in Winter 2020. Seeing that these units are basically computers with the ability to remember system time and time zone, they must have some kind of CMOS backup battery like a PC does. Probably a CR 2032 or similar. Has anyone had to replace their backup battery on their X, Live I/II, or One yet? How difficult/easy would it be? Those types of batteries usually last 3-5 or 6 years, and the modern MPCs have been out since 2018 or so. Or is it a soldered on the board cylindrical type? How were older MPCs with regard to backup batteries?

The hardware in modern MPCs is a lot closer to what you'd find in tablets and smartphones, and those devices don't use CMOS batteries, they store their settings in non-volatile memory, and use their internet connection to sync time when needed. Photos I've seen of the MPC mainboard don't appear to have a place for a CMOS battery.

That’s basically what @Lampdog told me in a private message. Although I never use the Wi-Fi on my X (unless I’m downloading a trial of the new instruments/effects). So I don’t know how it keeps good time. Anyway, one less thing to worry about. Thanks.

Well, I'm replacing the CMOS battery on my MPC Live 1 right now. Apparently it's a CR1220, which I've never heard of, but I can see it right next to the heat sink. Still trying to figure out how to remove it without pulling the heat sink.

Yes there is an battery in your MPC X.
It's on the board with the heatsink.

I believe all of the models use a CR1220 battery. That said, if your MPC is kept plugged in all the time, there’s generally no need to replace it.

If you start noticing that the system clock resets every time you power it up, then it’s probably time to change the battery.

I can confirm that there also is abattery in the MPC XL. For the OG X there comes a day that you will have to replace it. You'll know "that day has come" when you'll have to reactivate your plugins everytime you reboot the machine.
