The only benefit to formatting IMHO is 1. Allowing you to change the default format (they usually come EXFAT from the factory), 2. Allowing you to change the size of the partition, or create multiple partitions, 3. Allowing you to choose your own allocation cluster size (it’s usually a default of 4096 bytes, and for reference - 1 Megabyte is 1 million bytes) and if your user attached storage is used to save mostly samples which are large enough to be measured in Megabytes, you can *SLIGHTLY* speed up disk speed by increasing your allocated cluster size to something larger, though that comes with its own trade offs (it will take up a little more disk space), and finally 4. If your SD Card/USB stick/SSD came from a shady retailer or country of origin, formatting it may be the only way to insure that it doesn’t have any state-sponsored malware snuck onto your system.
