Ping-Pong Sample Hold?

Sorry for the basic question. Say I have a pattern of sample chops going. Some of the chops are are a bit too short, thus creating empty space and a “choppy”, start-stop feel. I want those short samples to be able to fill that empty space and extend until the next chop but i don’t want to time stretch or tune down the samples.

Instead I want the sample to extend, and have it do the thing where it loops and starts playing in reverse to fill that space. My friend has an octatrak and on there it’s called ping-ponging I believe. So i want the sample to hold and start playing in reverse to fill that empty space. What is that called on an MPC?

I don't have the mpc in front of me, but you should be able to do that on the page where you can see the waveform of your sample in program edit. One option should be forward and there is the option of reverse and your pingpong option as well

Also try the TAIL LENGTH feature in the program edit. It's very simple and effective.

And turn off loop lock for better precision

Then open the release envelope a bit

The feature is called TAIL and it has parameters TAIL LENGTH and TAIL START. I think it only does a cross-faded forward loop, and you can't adjust it too much. It does soften chopped ends, and it may be suitable for your case. Too bad there aren't more options to tailor what exactly it does, like ping-pong mode, or an adjustable envelope curve.
