I found why I had failed so far: the Akai MPC only sends midi clock when playing its sequence... So, while I was noodling with the Launchkey Mini Mk3 USB MIDI keyboard's arpeggiator, with the MPC not playing the sequence but just acting as a synthesizer, the Launchkey had no idea about the sequence's tempo.
But after I press "Play start", the Launchkey's arpeggiator does follow the MPC's sequence's tempo - even as I change that tempo on the fly on the MPC.
As for noodling on the Launchkey's arpeggiator without the MPC sequence playing, which is useful when the sequence already contains notes for that instrument (which of course we don't mute, because we are playing it from the Launchkey), the good news is that the Launchkey remembers the tempo of the last MIDI clock it received. So, start the MPC's sequence, stop it - and there you go noodling away on the Launchkey's arpeggiator at the right tempo, ready to press "record" on the MPC when the cooking begins to smell nice !
