Lightning to 3.5mm adapter. Doesn’t matter whether it’s in controller mode or not. Works the same

I’ve used that amongst a host of other cords and I don’t get any signal. Do I need that camera adapter ?

Just to make sure, you are trying to connect your iPhone using the MPC's audio jack inputs, not the USB port?
If you want to connect the phone via USB you would need the Apple camera adapter, although from the top of my head I don't know for a 100% if the MPC can act as an audio interface for a smartphone.
