Support and discussion for all of Akai’s modern standalone MPCs including the MPC X / X SE, MPC Live 1, 2 & 3, MPC One / One+, MPC Key 37/61.

Years back I bought a used Live 1 decksaver ($30, it had a small scratch) & I love it. Decksavers are a great, especially if you travel around with your gear. They are fairly pricey new, but still fairly worth it if you have to have it.

This leads me to my AKAI fantasy request:
MPC's (& all expensive gear for that matter) should come with a decksaver!

Maybe I'm dreaming too hard  but would it kill them to include one? Seems weird to me that they let 3rd party vendors make $ when they could easily include a decksaver, tack on $50-$100 on the MSRP & we'd never know the difference.
Ah well, just a thought...

these little accessories will add unnecessary costs. plus, I'd like to have the option of getting an option of other 3rd party covers, like digital deck covers.

as a data point, ive got a digital deck cover at the office for my Xse that lives there, and ive got the decksaver for the Xse that lives at my project studio.

i support your love for the decksaver , however, and think it its cheap insurance for your equipment.

Never really considered Decksavers suitable for travel, I use them in the studio as dust covers, general protection and dare I say, the ability to put random stuff on top of my gear (e.g. flash drives, papers, other gear....). I have many decksavers! I also have some felt covers for gear that doesn't have a decksaver, such as my Nord 3 Drum

Akai or inMusic could be making their own with the option to customize it or pick one of many different designs. I'm sure they could sell it cheaper than Decksaver. This should a side service/company. The cover should a paid add on, so people don't have to pay for it if they don't want it.

Yeah, I took the cost into account, but I doubt it would be any more than they are now (~$100). What are the digital deck covers like?

I should have stated I also have the magma carrying case (soft), but I feel much better with the decksaver on inside!

TBH I'd prefer to support a small, locally run company like Decksaver (well, 30 miles away from me at least), rather than suggesting Akai take their idea and undercut them so we can save a couple of bucks. Electron license their covers directly from Decksaver, that would seem to be the more honourable option.

Decksaver also claim to have patents in aspects of these covers, so I doubt akai would be wanting to go there in the first place.

I do get the general sentiment on social media that Decksavers seem overpriced 'for a bit of plastic' but beyond the materials, marketing and design costs, the lack of competition no doubt allows them to engage in a bit of 'luxury pricing'.

I see a guy on Ebay who makes black knockoffs for Digitakts which look awful (IMO) and are clearly not rigid (i.e. thin, generic, vacuum formed plastic), but these are still £25 . It's ultimately a niche product.

My digitakt came with one of those black covers. It looks EXACTLY as decksaver and the only difference is the colour. It's made out of either a bit thinner, either slightly different type of polycarbonate though as it have a bit more "give" than the original. If you apply some force, you will be able to twist it along the diagonal line between two corners but nothing excessive. I would imagine it would rather fail by "stress whitening" rather than crack. 5 years in with it and UV still doesn't seem to have any effect on my buttons nor on the cover itself (I don't count any mechical scratches). Always thought that any decksaver type covers are too bulky, 100% prefer those felt covers though...

I have a decksaver for the MPC, but I think they are too expensive.
And I dont think the material ( polycarbonate ) plus design work justifies it.
Possibly the recessed design makes it more sturdy than a flat top, and sure you need to test it,
make a form and machine for it, etc etc, but still.
If it were 12,- Euro, ok. But 4 times that I think is too much.

And Id actually prefer if Akai or any company etc would make a lid for their instruments that can be snaped on. With foam inlet.
It would not be that expensive, and would make transportation much more safe than
a lose polycarbon lid can.
Also, the "smoked" material is nice but do we really need that 1960s style ?.
I for one do not need to see the knobs through the lid,
I need a cover for dust and transportation, thats all.
And to place your paperwork and unpaid bills on top or a line of coca or
whatever a flat top would be more convenient.

Rant rant rant, over.

There was a thread on redding where one dude thought about printing a decksaver in the library next to his house, here's what I wrote back then and it still stands today:

"I have zero experience on 3d printing" - let me explain a couple of things then :)
First of all, your decksaver / print, won't fit on any common bedslinger so you will have to print it in parts and diy it at home (piece it togheter / glue it etc).

Doubt that your library have any of the latest / modern printers that on paper can go up to 600mm/s and in reality 200mm. Most probably it's some sort of small/medium bedslinger running at approx 60-100mm/s which will take at least several hours for one full bed volume and depending on how the model is split - you will need at least two / three bed volumes worth of print. All of that is considering worst but fastest print quality with 0.6 nozzle and same layer height. After such print, it will take you absolute ages to make it decent looking, i'm talking sanding/ filling/ sanding againg / painting and overall post processing.

You have to consider the material used - 99%, that printer will run on PLA or PLA+ as it's most cheap and easy to print. This comes with some drawbacks though: PLA - Polyactic Acid, biodegradable material derived from corn and sugarcane. It will degarde under UV and heat in no time. Leave it in direct sunlight and I guarantee you it will deform within a couple of such "sessions". Your layers will start splitting and a whole structure becomes brittle af.

If you don't want to spend fortune, your best bet is to go to any hardware store, buy two sheets of acrylic (doesn't have to be thick and expensive one), rough sand it so the paint can stick, superglue it and paint it colour of your choice. Guarantee you it will be much faster, durable and in similar price range.

Take it from a guy who used to run 3d printing farm of 8 printers ;)

I just wish they'd release a Decksaver or Akai would release a proprietary cover for the Key 61. I understand it's a big bulky device, but there are Decksavers for other 61 key keyboards I believe. I'm waiting for the day I come home and my cat has been on mine and cracked the screen like she did to my Tascam Model 12. I even tried to make a petition to send to Decksaver but no one signed it hardly. Anyway, one can wish...
