Does anyone know if Akai left the 5v power off the MIDI port, or is it activated somewhere in preferences?
Maybe it’s just broken on my unit.

I cannot get my PocketSync to power up from my MPC One but it works fine with my Alesis SR16.

AFAIK MIDI does not deliver power over. Of the 5 pins only 3 are used.

I think the MIDI signals themselves are 5V.Though a revision of the spec allows for a voltage as low as 3.3.

Maybe that's why.

Thanks, but devices over the years have utilized the 5v on pin 4.

My PocketSync gets its power from that on the SR16 and the Boss RC-10.

The switch from 5v to 3.3v standard in 2014 definitely looks like it might be the issue though. Thanks for pointing it out.

Thanks for the link - if I can find one this will be a solution.

For now I have a Rube Goldberg workaround where I drive the SR16 from the MPC One and draw the sync audio (via the PocketSync) from the SR16 at the same time.

Why? The SR16 internal clock BPM is inaccurate and is noticeably off after 16 or so measures, so this way I can force the SR16 to output a reliable BPM.

By the way, it seems the SR-16 doesn’t pass the incoming clock through directly, but instead regenerates its own clock based on it…

Well, thanks for pointing that out - I didn’t spot it originally in the manual.
Happily though this newly generated clock from the SR16 appears to be rock solid, at least in my testing.
