Trouble recording external instruments?

Yesterday I was able to capture my keyboard and make a loop. Now today it is playing through and registering but I cant seem to capture any audio? Im using the same process and every video they just launch> record and boom. Im hoping I just a messed up setting somewhere? My track is armed. It just makes an empty clip.

So Its only if I try to make a custom clip length. I can record 2 bars. if I edit the clip it wont record anything. what am i missing here?
