Midi Dump

i currently don't use a computer at all for sequencing, I do everything in the mpc, but I have a friend with proTools. I wondering how to get my midi files into ProTools so that they can be edited in ProTools midi sequencer. Is it as simple as saving to a floppy and opening the midi file in proTools, or do I need to do a midi dump from the mpc? Is there any kind of assignments that need to be made in proTools to make sure that the mpc is strictly being used as a sound module?

I'm not really sure if there would be any advantages to doing the midi sequencing in ProTools, but I'd like to try it out just for the experience.

save to floppy. set protools to send midi and mpc to receive and you are set.
i think its alot easier to work with a computer sequencer than the mpc's when it comes to editing a sequence and making variations of the beat and stuff. i definately prefer to bang out a beat on the pads to get started, but after that i like computer sequencer (namely reason's).

thanks, man that clears some things up. Once before I'd tried to get the files over and didn't have any luck. For some reason I was thinking I could record the midi into proTools just by slaving the mpc to proTools and "recording". Needless to say it was driving me crazy trying to figure out why it wasn't working, until I thought "maybe I'm trying to do something that can't be done".

I had a (borrowed)copy of the first version of Reason, prior to me owning an mpc and really liked it, though I could never make myself sit down and make beats with a the mouse & keyboard. While spring cleaning my mac one day I accidentally threw out all the default sounds, so now my Reason is worthless, it won't even load without them.

yeah you can dump via midi as long as they are synced. i just find it easier to save/load a .mid file. yeah reason is real tight, but not for just using a mouse to click in beats. that's how i was using it at first too (cause i had real bad latency and no midikeys), but with a midi keyboard for the synths and samplers and my mpc for banging beats into it as a midi drum controller and this moFx unit i have i use as a midi knob tweaker it is pretty ill though. i like it alot better than just making sample based stuff on the mpc.
