Tribe "vibe"

hey, i was listening to some tribe the other day(newer stuff)...and started figuring out thier beats.

Anyways, i noticed that they rely on the boombap, and lyrics. The bass is sort of in the back ground-still there, but not like a west coast lead or nothing....and they also have some jazzy loops. I also noticed their snares are snappy...but pretty much all basic boom bap.

ANY Tips on how to get the bass like that? do they just roll off the top and notch out space for kick drums?

filtering. U get a sample that has a low end, or a bassline in it and filter out everything. It helps to use a program instead of the mpc to get real nasty with the filter. Like cut all the crap below 80 out and cut all the crap from 250hrtz on up out. then u can get a real low warm bass thats allready in the key of ur song. caue its from the song.

Really? I didnt realize it was the filter trick with the sample! It seriously sounds like they layed down the bass with a synth, then just equed, filtered and mixed it differantly!
