Buying my Macbook pro next week, need advice Plz.

When It comes to Music production what should I be looking for in terms off, proccessers, cpu, memory.
I know very little about computers which is why I'm asking, also I'm buying it refurbished from apple, you can save up to 600 bucks refurnished.

macs
- alot easier not to **** up
- if you do **** up good luck repairing it its gona cost
- everyones got one


PCs
- alot cheaper for the same perforamce
- if not taken care of its going to start glitching all over the place
- not popular anymore

IF your ill with computers save the money get a PC and just make sure you dont get any viruses and maintain it well

If your not into computers and dont mind throwing down cash, go for the short cut PC

i started with macbook pro and know am going to design a PC for my home studio

For music production, get the largest hard-drive installed. Any laptop bought directly from Apple is more than adequate. I'm still using my Macbook Pro from 2007 and it runs CS5 (Photoshop, indesign, etc) Logic pro, and pro-tools 8.0 like brand new. These computers are workhorses, and will be by your side for YEARS!
If you need more ram, check the specs and buy the PC Ram for it. Apple approved ram is expensive!!

I'd recommend a refurbished macbook pro 4.1. That's the last model of the pro (early 2008 release) before they went to the unibody style - very bug free and lots of expansion ports. Newer ones loose a firewire port and the expresscard port which can be a pain...especially since protools doesn't like hubs being used for instance. And you should be able to find a 4.1 that still has apple care on it. I have one of these with 2.5 dual core and 6gb of ram... and it absolutely smokes my pc even though the pc has better specs. And keep in mind music work isn't really that cpu intensive compared to graphics stuff... so you don't need the latest and greatest processors, etc. My laptop seems underpowered compared to what's coming out today but I have no need for anything more... I've had full PT sessions with 48 tracks and rewire going no probs.

As for a hard drive definitely 7200 rpm...but I must say my 500gb 7.2k drive is noticeably slower on startup than my original 200gb drive. I would get the smallest system drive you can deal with and then keep your audio files on an external.

PCs seem to run better if you dedicate the machine to music only. Once you get the system running tight don't even update anything on it.

I have no idea what ghz is But wanna know

it's the speed the processor runs at. the higher the better, as it means the chip runs faster. but if it's a choice between 3.3GHz with not much RAM and 2.8GHz with lotsa RAM, I'd go for the extra RAM

ideally, get the higher GHz and more RAM. but always moar RAM.
