Remix Process

Just want to know what type of process some of you use to remix a song with MPC (doesn't matter what version). For example my brother samples all the vocals into the 4000 and builds on it from there. I have a 1000 so I don't think there is any way for me to use his process because the sampling time is drastically different from the 4000 to the 1000.

It would be interesting to hear other producers methods of remixing a song. Holla back!

What I do is I thorw the vocals in Cool-Edit and just play them about three times. We I get an idea, I lay everything down in the MPC and then I track in over the vocals and mix with the vocals playing. I works pretty nicely. (Check out my newest remix "Aaliyah Remix Numer 2")

I usually start with a beat, like "Oh... Nas would sound hot on this" lol.... so since i can bus my MPC to the line out of my dj mixer, i can match the acapella up to the beat DJ style... then i track the vocals into Acid, and lace the beat behind that (backwards from the normal song creating process) to add studders, and change up's and shit.... lastly, i'll go in and add cuts.

Yeah I did a Jay-Z remix and tracked the vocals through Acid, I like Acid for that reason, its easy to use. But lately I have been having some troubles using Midi with it. For some reason I can't get it to midi through to my MPC.

That remix you did is hot, I'm feeling that. I just wish I could get around this midi issue that ****** wit my production.

The first thing I do is figure out the tempo of the original. I don't like to stretch or re-pitch vocals.....it just never sounds right to me.
Then I make the basic beat at that tempo.
I always listen to the rhythm of the rapping, and try to incorporate the feel of those rhythms into the beat when I make it.

I'll track the basic loop into ProTools with PT sending Midi Beat Clock to the MPC at the same tempo (that makes editing easier, and I can re-track the beat as many times as I want without disturbing the rest of the track.)\

Then I track the acapella in and line it up with the beat (I'll chop and edit to get it to line up perfectly if I have to.)
On a Mos Def remix I just did, I edited up the vocals and basically changed the structure and hook of the song.

Then I'll go back and re-program the beat with variations, and herbs and spices. Then I'll re-record the beat into ProTools (using the MidiBeatClock, it will line up perfectly with the tracks that are already in PT.)

Then, I'll fine tune, add effects, add scratching, do mutes, etc. etc. and polish that muh fuh into shape.

What's the MIDI problem????
Are you trying to sync the MP to the computer or visa versa???

I'm trying to sync the MP to the Computer, making the MP the master and the program on the computer the slave. I can either use Acid (which I prefer) or I can use Reason. I have tried both but can't get a signal, read all manuals back and forth and still no signal. I'm getting heated B! Any suggestions?

I do that same sh*t.

In fact, i also did it with a Mos Def track. "Travellin' Man".... he sings on the original hook, but i recreated my own hook by scratching various parts of his verses into the song.

yo i just make a beat, and record it into my multitracker (roland). then i sample the verses and hook, and put em on pads. Next i just record the verses onto they own tracks in the roland. i just trigger the sample at the right moment and record it like i had a emcee in the lab. Yeah i know its ghetto, but peep my remixes i think they are decent

You used the acapella off the DJ Honda 12" right? w/that Problemz joint on the flip?

I do the same thing too itchy

I just use Adobe Audition because a Pro Tools solution is an investment I did not make yet

what Pro Tools software and hardware do you use ?

I just use the DIGI 001 on a Mac G4 400mhz.
Not too much else...a couple of little synths, turntables, and the MPC.
I like to keep things as close to simple as possible. I get more done that way.

...and yeah Archetype, DJ Honda. Not a lot of people have heard that track. The 12 I have is Travellin Man on one side, and B side is Travellin Man Remix. The remix has different lyrics, so I used the acapella from the remix side.
