no doubt, all of the above ^^^

but finding a good sounding hit to begin with is what im all about. then i actually spend more time matching, making kits, then tweaking individual sounds. know what im saying?

I didn't even think to run my drums through my tt mixer. I usually sample my drum breaks from vinyl and I do a bit if eq"ing before I sample them but I'm gonna resample my drum hits and run them through my tt mixers eq, actually take my time, lol.

good to see eveeryone getting some nice techniques in their sampology I filter everything of course, but there is one thing that no one has said and I suppose it kinda goes with out saying but i can not say it..... TUNE TUNE TUNE your drum samples. Disconence is one thing, crappy out of tune samples is another

I sampled all my drums to my computer. I have all my drum sounds saved on my PC and I use Sony Acid to EQ and layer and tweak my drums and THEN I sample them into my MPC. I have way too many drums and it would be impossible for me to save all my drums in my MPC and its just much easier to organize and go through my drum sounds when their saved on the computer as opposed to the MPC...

most of my drums usually come from drum machines sampled into my mpc. jomox xbase888 usually layered with real vinyl surface noise, clicks etc. From there it goes into an old Biamp live 6-channel mixer.....thats it

My new secret weapon is the Schaak Audio Transient Shaper plugin. The thing I like about it is that, in addition to making your drums hit harder, you can also mellow them out if that's what the song calls for.

Aside from that I'm an EQ, filter and layering junkie. And ADSRs of course...

But at the end of the day, the sample you start with is the most important thing.

yeah, i mean you gotta start with decent samples and then i use a lot of EQ and tuning (like stated above) and the sp303. i've recently started having all of my drum sounds in mono with hardly any or no attack on them and just using loads of EQ and Effects on them. and i've been layering vinyl hiss on top of a lot of my drums and then tweak 'em to get the sound im looking for.

so for me, i use the 303, EQ, ADSR, Tune and vinyl hiss

How do you like the effects of the SP 303, especially compressor ,EQ and reverb? Cause I have a Boss BR600 8 track with effects and I don't like them at all. Settings for the compressor are only attack release and level, only 2 types of reverb,4-band EQ...
So I was wondering if it was the same for the 303, cause I heard it has dope effects...

I never boost frequencies, I always cut offending frequencies to bring out the frequencies I want. Then I just boost the gain. DJ's already know.

You're right, that's a general rule of thumb in mixing, but in sound design (which is what we're talking about) all the rules go out the window.

For me, it depends on the EQ. Its true that boosting usually adds distortion and phasing, but that may sound good on the right EQ unit. I never ever ever boost with my MPC's internal EQ (except for the shelving filters) and I rarely boost with software EQs (except Softube EQs where the boost sounds great) but on my SSL Alpha Channel I boost all the time because it sounds good.

i love the 303. i cant speak on its reverb, cuz i've honestly have never used its reverb. but i do use its compressor and Eq. i run my drum tracks through it and it makes 'em hit HARD. very nice and warm sound, especially for my snares.

the 303 has lo/mid/hi EQ and sustain/attack/level for the compression

I cook them in butter and garlic for about 10 minutes, then throw it in the pan and add onions, peppers, salt, chicken thighs and some nutmeg.

Thanks! It seems like it's kind the same settings... But I find the effects cold in the BR 600
