Train & use your ear to identify key signatures & pitch/tone. Once that aspect has been managed, you can then freely play out whatever you want...at least from a keyboard players point of view.

Filtered out sawtooth, square or sine waves (single cycle loops) played monophonically always hit the sweet spot. In fact all the methods mentioned thus far work just as well.

Use a dyad, one for the sub and the other to better hear the note.

Yeah just take a bass note from a record and filter it down in the MPC. Once you figure it out you can really make any bass sound from a record sound good.. If the bass note isnt long enough I will put it into Cool Edit and loop it and then sample it into my MPC.. MPC filters will make your bass sound really dope... If you want you can even filter out the highs before you sample it into your MPC and then filter it again once it's in the MPC..
