Of late I have been experimenting with playing the whole section out. like first, lay down a kick snare groove. Next track put down the hi -hat. next track shakers. etc...

gotta try that...

now what ive been trying is to mess with the swing and note delay.....then laying down a hihat using the note repeat (that is effected by the swing i choose) Like the other day i used: late: at 1....and 52% swing.....just did the hihat in 8ths....

then i do a no quantize kick and snare to the hihat groove. Gotten the drums to bounce though!

I usually do a 4 bar loop, some times more or less depending on what's on top of the drums. If I'm doing a stripped down track, I usually roll w/2 bars and flip up sequences. More instrumentation and I add more bars to get a longer melody.

i think in terms of vertical (# of tracks) and horizontal (# of bars). i'll start with a short (horizontally) loop, add stuff vertically till it gets unwieldy (forcing me to be muting and unmuting all the time). once that happens its time for a bit of horizontal arrangement, then back to vertical in the new (longer) time frame. lather rinse repeat.

I have my MPC set to default to 16 bars, then I just I copy and paste the best parts.
