Modifying an 808 can be nice too if you get it right.

Of course, you can digg for a bass but I find this very tedious to get right at times. A lot of Jazz has some nice usable bass.

definately tedious, but easier if you "collect" them as you find them. eventually youll have a bag of 1 shots you can try out with your current beat. I've pretty much stopped collecting now cause i have tons and eventually some will sort of overlap/sound the same. Really the best ones are like those random moog notes, or layered bass note + instrument....when turned into a bas they can sound funky.
