well, drums are the backbone of most good beats-there are exceptions.......but usually my drums are basic boom bap......so regardless what i start with, they are gonna end up the same; so usually i use em like a Click pattern for the frame work. BUt i can drop em in, or i can scratch them all to gether and work them to the melody.
Basically it depends on the sample and mood. Sometimes a drum rhythm can give me inspiration to a melody.....but sometimes i find a melody that im like, "i gotta make this a beat"
I say try both and thats what ive been doing..........i mean, if you find a sample/melody, try to lay drums to it......then Try it the other way around, let the melody sit (write it down if you are composing) or dont chop the sample until you get drums down....lay down drums, then chop to the drums.
See what you get and which one you like better.
Thats why i say use y our drums like a click track, you know, just dont keep everything in stone cause. Ive noticed that when i do drums first, i chop more, when i try to lay drums to the melody, unless its just a dope melody, it ends up being a "looop".
