I understand. Never called that process overheads, but I also do that sometimes. It creates a fake room/overhead effect right?

yeah. specially f u use a HF. Your gonna mainley have the hats and crashes.. that way u have more room for ur own kicks n snares..

not only, but most of the time.

if you use stereo drum samples try setting only the low frequencies (e.g. below 250 Hz ) to mono. i use the free plug-in stereo touch from voxengo to achieve this.
