Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

I'm trying to find out which effect(s) to use to make vocals stand out in the mix. I wanna make the vocals appear closer, jumping-out-of-the-speakers kinda thing, if you know what I mean. It's a certain effect, used by a lot of people. The best example I can think of now is the effect used on the hook/chorus of Rakim's Guess Who's Back.

I'd appreciate any help!

OK, so you're telling me they use a limiter on Rakim's voice in the chorus on "Guess Who's Back"? :?

No one can tell you what they used on Rakims voice except the actual engineer who did it.

What people can tell you is to experiment with a limiter, compressor, a dash of reverb and noise gate. Those are usually my ingredients.

Then again you might not have the same plugins/hardware that that one engineer used on Rakims voice u know what I'm saying. Software/Hardware effects sound different even though the names says REVERB and different sound cards are used also so that might play a big part in the whole outcome of the vocal understand what I'm saying..

Hope that helps a little..

Lamp is dead on. Be careful with the reverb tho.

YES THATS EXACTLY what Iam saying the REQ 4 brings up the levels
and makes your vocs stand out more along with the L1 Ultramaximizer

Yeah Vocals are my specialty I specialize in this field of expertise
if you want to keep it phunky I'll even put Amplitube on the vocs
and call it a day but if you want your vocals to STAND OUT try to
take some advice it may help you.

Thanks again Lampdog for dat  8)
